Overview
BGI's Global Infrastructure Group is expanding, creating new opportunities for experienced UNIX administrators to provide daily administration for server systems supporting third-party and in-house developed applications throughout the firm. This will require working closely with other system administration teams, software development teams, end users, and software vendors to provide optimum system performance and availability. The server environment is growing rapidly and continued growth is expected. Both permanent and contract positions available in either our San Francisco headquarters or Rancho Cordova data center (Sacramento area).

Responsibilities
System administration: Daily administration and support of the UNIX-based servers, including hardware and/or software installation/upgrade, shell scripting, system performance monitoring, system sizing, system integration, and hardware diagnostics. Applications development support: Work closely with the applications development teams, guiding developers in best practices related to using the underlying UNIX infrastructure and assisting them in resolving performance problems. Design and architecture: Recommend improvements to systems design and architecture for both systems and applications. Performance tuning: I/O tuning to achieve optimal performance for computational intensive applications. Documentation: Responsible for documentation of all activities and for following the company-prescribed, global standards and procedures.



Requirements
Minimum five years of UNIX administration/engineering experience, using Solaris and/or Linux (Redhat). Good knowledge of UNIX system internals. Experience in the financial industry or other mission-critical environment preferred. Application development experience preferred to develop and enhance infrastructure and automation tools. Proven experience in scripting skills in Shell and/or Perl. Operational experience with Sun Enterprise hardware and storage systems. Must have volume management software experience (Veritas VxVM and VxFS, ODS) Extensive knowledge of networking protocols such as TCP, RPC, NIS and NFS. NFS troubleshooting experience required. Sun Jumpstart with pre-script and post-script experience. Web server (Apache), Samba, Mail and DNS. Knowledge of SAN and NAS technologies. Strong communication, documentation, teamwork, and relationship-building skills. College degree preferred, including formal coursework in computer science. Flexible hours required for all positions. Maintenance and installation work usually performed outside of regular working hours. Certain positions must be willing to carry a pager 24 hours per day when on call. Certain positions require regular travel between San Francisco and Rancho Cordova locations.
