Senior VOIP Design Engineer

Design network topology and deployment for Vonage?s network. Coordinate with Network Operations Center, and other organizations where appropriate, for configuration and scheduling of implementation of additional capacity and new points of presence.

Analyze competitive network scenarios, and make recommendations for network changes regarding network architecture, new technology, and equipment selection. These recommendations must be based on consideration of redundancy, resiliency, capital cost, operating cost, and other factors calculated by the successful candidate.

Responsibilities:

Network Engineering/Design:
Develop and publish standards for network configuration; including routing architecture, physical configuration standards and inter- and intra-POP topologies.

Research new technologies and equipment and work with other internal groups to design, develop, and deploy new technologies.

Deployment of New Sites/Devices/Additional Capacity:
Work with Capacity Planning and Engineering groups to ensure that necessary equipment and capacity are ordered, tested and installed in time to meet demand. Track and report on progress of the design through final implementation. Actively work to support cross functional groups by performance of other tasks as required (i.e., testing of equipment prior to shipping).

Work with vendors of network equipment to understand and incorporate new features and products into designs as appropriate. Make recommendations regarding new technology and/or vendors based upon this vendor interaction.

Analysis and Reporting:
Analyze network requirements, equipment capabilities, and physical and equipment requirements to make written recommendations and oral presentations on planning and designs. Analyze and report on various aspects of network architecture, data center builds and equipment selections.

Employee must analyze requirements from within the group, from other groups and from outside the company and select appropriate process to fulfill design requirements. Employee is responsible for choosing the optimal technical and process mechanisms for accomplishing tasks.


Employee must have a 4-year bachelor?s degree or equivalent experience. A total of 5 to 8 years of industry experience is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
A thorough understanding of SIP signaling, SS7, RTP, MGCP and ISDN is required. Must be familiar with media gateways from Cisco and Sonus.
In-depth knowledge of telecommunications transmission standards including: T1/E1, T3/E3, and SONET/SDH.
Experience with Ethernet (VLANs, 802.1q, etc) and IP routing (BGP, OSPF, ISIS) is strongly preferred.
The demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve routing issues, congestion problems, and hardware and software failures strongly preferred.
Candidate must have experience with physical layer installation of hardware in a data center environment.

Programming and scripting (C and/or Perl)
Electrical and optical circuit test equipment
