Software Developer - Computer Professional VI

This opening is for a large scientific linux cluster problem solver with significant high-level system experience in the Tier-1 Facility Group in the CD/CMS Department at Fermilab. The CMS experiment will take data at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) starting in 2007. Several petabytes per year of data collected from the detector and generated by the simulation and data processing systems must be cataloged and efficiently delivered to the scientists around the clock, and around the globe.

The successful candidate will assist with the smooth operation of the Tier-1 facility especially in development of an effective computing infrastructure for event reconstruction and user analysis of detector data. The successful candidate will be expected to help integrate the scientific computing needs of the CMS experiment with the effective operation of a condor batch system, develop methodologies to ensure the proper operation of a global file system by the experiment, and the design tools to assist administrators with the detailed configuration of the computing environment. The selected individual will have to work well with the existing team members and with a large number of scientific personnel.

Responsibilities

Develop, integrate and troubleshoot the scientific condor batch environment for the CMS Tier-1 and LPC-CAF computing facilities. Assist users in solving their problems, and design methods to avoid their difficulties. Assist in diagnosing and alleviating bottlenecks in the current grid interfaces to the computing system including computing and storage elements. Assist in development of monitoring for the grid interfaces; The facilities are Linux based.
Investigate and develop methodology to maintain the hardware in a global file system, currently IBRIX, in proper working order, to verify its state in an easily identifiable manner, and assist with future extensions of the hardware. This includes disk, controllers, network and server components. Provide support for the software aspects of the global file system. Develop meta-tools to assist with large scale deployment of Open Source software products on linux cluster to a scale of thousands of nodes. Work independently and as part of a team of computer professionals to identify, implement, and develop CMS computing services, especially to make future deployments more effective and easier.Investigate and trouble-shoot problems encountered by leading scientists in the field of high-energy physics in their work and interact/consult with them to develop methods to eliminate difficulties. Share in off-hour pager rotation.


Requirements

BS or MS preferred in computer science or a related engineering or technical field, or equivalent experience.Must have 2 years experience managing a cluster of greater than 250 Linux nodes and more than 1 TB of disk.Must have at least 2 years experience with grid or distributed computing.Must have thorough knowledge of Unix and detailed knowledge of the Linux operating system. Must be proficient in shell scripting and have experience with Python and/or Perl. Must be comfortable with Open Source deployments.Must be experienced with compiling and tuning Linux kernels. Must be fluent in English with excellent written and oral communication skills.,li> Must be able to learn new skills and adapt to different environments.Experience with XFS filesystems is preferred.Knowledge of C, C++, or Java is preferred.
