Description
The Senior DBA is a member of a team supporting primarily Oracle applications for campus users contracting support with IT Services. The DBA team is part of the Shared Application Services group within IT Services, the central IT organization for Stanford University.
Operations duties include support of Oracle DBMS on RedHat Linux and Solaris, as well as MySQL on Linux. Install, configure, and support of Oracle relational database management (RDBMS) including Oracle/RAC and related software, understanding of application use of DB, strong system administration skills (principally in Unix), and effective oral and written communication skills. Proof-of-concept testing around current tools and core functions, as well as new tools to augment and/or replace core functions. Provide expert resolution of complex performance and capacity issues. Training and mentoring of other technical staff members will be key characteristics of this Senior DBA role.
Automation duties include the ability to use, apply, run, and scale in the least hands-on way possible the following areas: job scheduling, script writing, DB build management, rapid DB provisioning, performance tuning, and virtual DB administration. Evaluation and implementation of new utilities and tools for automation around current tools and functions and improving operational automation.
Systems and Environmentals include the ability to use, apply, and run in the most automated way possible: Backup and Recovery, Storage using block mass storage (SAN) and filer technologies (NAS), performance monitoring and resource usage, trend analysis, and capacity planning. Database design development and performance optimization development, data modeling, as well as evaluating new technologies and/or vendors to improve overall client service, definition and implementation of production database standards.
Security focus will include standard practice DBMS security, application of Stanford security policies and practices including access control for Restricted Data classifications.
R&D will cover hands on testing of new tools and technologies, automation of DBA tasks, research of current tools and core functions, innovation of new tools to augment and/or replace core functions, and development work based on collaboration with ITS Strategist and architecture teams.
Qualifications:
Experience supporting enterprise class database applications and systems including the performance analysis and tuning of high-volume transaction systems. Experience with managing projects involving DBMS evaluation, implementation and upgrades.
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, plus 6 to 10 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience with the installation and operation of Oracle RDBMS and related products on Redhat/Linux or Solaris/Unix. Experience with installation, patching, configuring, monitoring and troubleshooting Oracle databases. Experience with Oracle server architecture, implementation, and deployment, and experience with Oracle RAC required.
Experience with existing tools a plus: CA Autosys, BMC Datatools, RMON, EMC storage, BMC Patrol, Embarcadero DBArtisan, Quest Spotlight.
