System Administrator - Computer Professional VI

This opening is for a System Administrator in the Tier-1 Facility Group in the CD/CSS Department at Fermilab. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment will take data at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) starting in 2007. Several petabytes per year of data collected from the detector and generated by the simulation and data processing systems must be cataloged and efficiently delivered to the scientists around the clock, and around the globe. The successful candidate will assist with the smooth operation of the Tier-1 facility especially in providing an effective scientific computing infrastructure on a large for efficient analysis of data. The successful candidate will assist with the detailed configuration of the computing environment, including system reloads, and security. The selected individual will have to work well with the existing team members and with a large number of scientific personnel.

Responsibilities

Install, configure, maintain, upgrade, and operate the compute and storage systems in a highly responsible and responsive manner. Provide for effective computer security in accordance with Fermilab's policies. Share in off-hour pager rotation. Work independently and as part of a team of computer professionals to identify, implement, and support computing services. Install, upgrade, and test commercial and Open Source software products. Support leading scientists in the field of high- energy physics in their work and interact/consult with them on a daily basis.


Requirements

Must have a BS or MS in computer science or a related engineering or technical field, or equivalent experience.Must have 1 year experience managing a cluster of greater than 100 Linux nodes.Must have at least 1 year experience with grid or distributed computing. Must have thorough knowledge of Unix and detailed knowledge of the Linux operating system. Must be proficient in shell scripting and have experience with Python and/or Perl. Must be comfortable with Open Source deployments. Must be fluent in English with excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be able to learn new skills and adapt to different environments. Knowledge of C, C++, or Java is a plus.
