Systems Engineer ? Intermediate - Storage
The Office of Information Technologies (OIT) at the University of Notre Dame has an immediate opening for a Systems Engineer. This person will be responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining the operating system on servers in support of large-scale data storage and parallel file systems. Duties include performing software OS installations and upgrades, installing, configuring, and maintaining products or tools utilized in computer storage devices, scheduling installations and upgrades, and maintaining assigned systems in accordance with established IT policies and procedures.
Additional responsibilities may include acting as a project technical lead and/or functional lead for assigned projects. Project related tasks potentially include: requirements definition, estimating, design, development, documentation, testing, implementation, and maintenance. The engineer in this position may also provide supervision for entry-level system administrators or operators.
This Engineer reports to the Manager of Systems Engineering within Operations and Engineering Division (O&E) of the Office of Information Technology. He/She is expected to work with the newly formed Center for Research Computing (CRC) in support of computational technologies at the University. While the majority of work is performed during normal business hours, some evening and weekend work is required to maintain systems and minimize disruptions of service. Systems Engineers maintain an ?on call? support status in the event of an unscheduled service outage.
Requirements:
Successful candidates will have four years or more experience in the design, implementation, and administration of hardware and operating systems (UNIX/Linux preferred). This position requires particular expertise in file systems, parallel file systems, computer storage device installation, repair, and configuration. A minimum of three years experience with high-end storage technology is highly desired. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a combination of education and relevant experience required. One of the following Professional Certifications preferred: Sun Certified Network Administrator or Linux certification (LPI, RHCE). An in-depth knowledge of best practices for hardware/operating system configuration management, hardening techniques, and patch management is required. Demonstrated Project Management skills are highly desired.
About the Operations and Engineering Division:
The department of Operations and Engineering (O&E) within the OIT (oit.nd.edu) is responsible for the central 24x7 data center operations, help desk, and over two hundred computer systems, related HW, OS, and applications that serve the greater university community. Example services include the core administrative systems, email, calendaring, web, DNS/DHCP, Active Directory, LDAP, RADIUS, account generation, user authorization and authentication, Websphere, Cold Fusion, storage systems, backup, Citrix Metaframe, VMware ESX, and systems monitoring.
About the Center for Research Computing:
The CRC (crc.nd.edu) is a newly created center that will lead the preparation, promotion, and execution of a visionary roadmap for the growth, evolution and utilization of research technologies and support at the University of Notre Dame. The Center is anchored by a multi-year, multi-million dollar grant from the Department of Energy to establish the Northwest Indiana Computational Grid (www.nwicgrid.org) as a collaborative research initiative between Notre Dame, Purdue University, and DOE Labs.
