UNIX Engineer

This contractor would become part of the Unix Design/Support team with our client. This team is responsible for the design and support of the corporate Unix systems. The team supports 200+ servers that are mainly IBM RS/6000 Power 5 AIX systems with some Sun Solaris and Red Hat Linux. This environment utilizes EMC SANs storage including both DMX and Clariion arrays.

 

 

This contractor will work closely with other members of the Unix team to perform the system administration duties within the Unix environment. Responsibilities include performing the day-to-day operational functions such as:

 

1. Work with business contacts, application support personnel, and database administrators to design the hardware and software solution required to meet the needs of the business utilizing standard products, processes, and practices where possible.

 

2. Implementation and support of Unix servers that support corporate applications and services (e.g., Oracle databases, domain name servers, systems management tools, and voice response units).

 

3. Design, install, customize, tune, maintain, and monitor enterprise products and services across distributed, heterogeneous Unix platforms (e.g., IBM, SUN Solaris, Red Hat Linux).

 

4. Participate in 24 x 7 "On-call" support rotation for Unix systems, products, and services.

 

5. Perform daily performance monitoring of systems to ensure service levels are met and long term capacity planning to ensure resources are available to meet future needs/requirements.

 

6. Perform root cause problem analysis along with recommending and implementing preventive techniques.
