Unix System Administrator
The Unix System Administrator works with a team of administrators responsible for a heterogeneous corporate computing environment. In general, this person is responsible for designing a strategy for the Unix/Linux product which includes but is not limited to developing hardware roadmaps, operating system roadmaps, capacity planning, performance monitoring, high-availability, email, web servers, security, backups and disaster recovery. This position requires hands-on design, configuration, implementation and management of all Unix/Linux servers. Other responsibilities include providing support for the iPlanet Messaging System and anti-virus / anti-spam filtering, Apache/Java based web servers, SSL and other server level security. The individual will provide expert level escalation support for unresolved Help Desk issues and provide technical consultation to project managers. Also this person will be responsible for developing, designing, testing, and implementing plans and procedures to protect and continue information systems activities related to Unix servers in case of emergency or disasters. This position requires defining and implementing policies to comply with corporate governance. This position also requires maintaining good working relationships with vendors-consultants on projects and technical support issues and managing or monitoring projects with internal and external members with little supervision.
Qualified individuals will possess the following attributes:
Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or equivalent. Minimum of five years of Unix experience preferably in Solaris, Red Hat Linux and SuSe Linux. Familiarity with the hardware and software platforms in use at Actuant. This includes but is not limited to: Sun servers and Solaris OS, Linux (RedHat, SuSe), Veritas Foundation Suite and Veritas Netbackup, and iPlanet Messaging. Proven ability to identify, research and resolve systems problems in a timely manner. Must be able to evaluate technologies, develop strategies and deliver presentations to IT management. Demonstrated knowledge of backup and recovery practices, with experience in planning and executing disaster recovery initiatives. Technical and functional documentation skills are essential. Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently for on-time delivery working in a fast-paced environment. Flexibility to work over-time or weekends to resolve any Unix system related issues or maintenance. Self-motivated; proactive; team player; mentor for junior staff members. Strong Documentation skills. Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills and experience communicating with technical and non-technical audiences. Professional appearance and conduct. Ability to develop effective working relationships with customers, co-workers and management; strong customer service orientation. Ability to manage vendor support.

System Administration
Unix server product ownership, designing strategy, development and management. Test operating systems, software and hardware in support of business needs to evaluate ease of use, appropriate functionality and integration into our environment. Maintain hardware and OS on Sun and Linux systems. Monitor system usage and performance; provide capacity planning and systems roadmaps. Ensure data recoverability through system backups and disaster recovery processes. Interface with the application support personnel for ERP and web-based systems. Document server processes, policies and procedures suggesting revisions or additions as appropriate. Provide change, configuration and release management for the production environment to maintain compliance with Sarbanes Oxley requirements. Manage vendor support services. Provide input to the global infrastructure strategy. Function as a key resource within the team of administrators responsible for Unix, Novell, Windows, LAN/WAN, Security and Database services.
Messaging Systems Support
Administer iPlanet messaging server (hardware and software). Define Roadmap/Strategy for the email system. Manage mail server anti-virus and anti-spam functions (hardware and software) Manage Apache/Java bases web servers
