Major Responsibilities:
CENTRAL ANALYTICAL SERVICES CENTER
SAFFORD ARIZONA
***THIS POSITION IS TEMPORARY AND IS EXPECTED TO LAST A PERIOD OF 6-12 MONTHS***
The CASC is looking for motivated employees to work in a new, highly automated robotics analytical laboratory. These individuals must be well verse in current analytical activities and must be adaptable to new technological advances in the area of analytical chemistry.
Major Responsibilities:
- Will perform work in the new Central Analytical Service Center
- Will work with highly advanced and specialized robotic equipment
- Will be analyzing and reporting results for all on Phelps Dodge's North American Mining sites
- Will be responsible for providing accurate and timely results to the mining sites
- Will provide a high level of quality expertise and analytical reporting
- Under close supervision perform routine laboratory testing and analysis at the site.
- Perform laboratory technician duties to support the total operation of the analytical laboratory. Interacts with personnel at all levels to ensure the timely completion of daily analytical work as well as special requests and department projects.
- Perform routine chemical and/or metallurgical analysis and reporting.
- Operate and calibrate analytical instrumentation.
- Maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
- Prepare samples for analysis using appropriate techniques.
- Perform sample preparation and analysis for Quality Control.
- Perform laboratory duties to support daily analytical work as well as departmental project utilizing both wet chemical and instrumentation techniques.
- Maintain a current knowledge of site operational and safety policies and procedures.
- Actively participate in promoting safety and cleanliness in the analytical laboratory.
- Assist in laboratory personnel training.
- Support senior laboratory personnel on special assignments.
Minimum Requirements:
- A minimum of three (3) years analytical laboratory experience or equivalent experience in general laboratory work with general knowledge of laboratory safety and quality control protocol.
- Demonstrated record-keeping experience and data organization skills.
- Basic computer literacy, emphasis on MS Office.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and complete multiple analytical requests.
- Demonstrated safe handling of chemicals and acids using standard laboratory techniques.
- LIMS experience, a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical Competencies:
- Knowledge of site process, equipment and infrastructure.
- Knowledge of production schedules, timetable and goals.
- Knowledge of equipment, methods, and techniques appropriate to assignment.
- Knowledge of basic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Knowledge of laboratory computer software, including word processing, database and spreadsheet applications.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Skill in following safety practices and the proper handling and recognizing of hazardous chemicals.
- Skill in the use of laboratory instrumentation
- Skill in following oral and written instructions.
- Skill in planning, prioritizing, and scheduling daily multiple assignments.
- Skill in communicating effectively, orally and in writing.
- Skill in motivating, communicating with and instructing/training others, using both technical and non-technical language to explain subjects and processes.
Criteria/Conditions (specific background and skills):
Some of the work may be performed in a mine or manufacturing plant with exposure to extremes in weather. Work may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles. There is a frequent need to stand, stop, walk, sit, reach, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stair and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see. The incumbent may occasionally be required to lift moderately heavy to heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. The incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment on a regular basis: hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety foot wear. The incumbent will be required to wear the following PPE as needed: respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing (rain suit, etc.), gloves, and other PPE as determined to protect the individual.
