Summary


 


This role serves as the underwriting leader within the defined territory for Specialty Insurance.  (Product lines include: Inland Marine and related Property, Ocean Cargo, Hull & Marine Liabilities, Professional Liability, CGL/Umbrella and Programs.)  Achieve profit and growth objectives and provide strategic leadership, planning and development for most Specialty product lines. Direct the territory’s growth, book management, and agency relationships. This leader manages a staff of underwriting managers and underwriters. Partners with Enterprise Distribution Management team on the execution of Specialty strategies. This role reports to the Specialty Regional Underwriting Executive.


 


Responsibilities:


 

Drive the profitability and growth of respective lines of business results within a specified territory. Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, philosophy and procedures.
Develop business plans in conjunction with the Regional Underwriting Executive and the respective Regional Product Executives and other leaders.
Review and ensure that marketing/agency plans are aligned with respective product line’s niche strategies and business goals.
Identify strategic opportunities for profitable growth.
Assist with book management including providing review, analysis and recommendations of overall business issues. Review and analyze overall business issues and territory providing information such as pricing, competitive trends and problem account identification.
Ensure excellent customer service and compliance with territory quality and service goals.
Develop a position of influence in the marketplace in conjunction with Regional Underwriting Executive and Distribution Management partners.
Manage performance to plan using underwriting and operational metrics to measure underwriting discipline, productivity, quality, service and achievement of financial results.
May serve as point person on market conduct exams.
Lead a culture of underwriting excellence. Instill a culture of accountability by setting clear expectations, measuring results, rewarding the right behavior and addressing consequences.
Develop and maintain a performance management culture by setting standards and measures for the selection, hiring, assessment and development of talent.


 


 


Requirements:


 

Comprehensive technical knowledge and knowledge of insurance products, coverages, underwriting practices & legal regulations, pricing process and sales distribution channels.
Seasoned understanding of the issues in building market share in niche businesses and track record of profitable growth.
Comprehensive knowledge of competition and marketing conditions.
Proven experience in developing strategies which will improve competitive position.
Build cross-functional business relationships with senior executives.
Effective team leader.
Execute metrics/scorecards to measure effectiveness and productivity.
Success in developing and retaining high caliber employees and building highly effective teams.
Influence at all levels, be persuasive and a good listener and assimilator of ideas and perspectives. Effective leader and partner in a matrix organization
Undergraduate degree; advanced degree preferred. Comparable training and experience to be considered.
