Business Systems Developer
Department: Information Services Reports To: Product Development Manager

Position Purpose:
Utilize Insurance Industry knowledge to conduct analysis, design, development and implementation phases in the automation of insurance products. Liaison between Information Services and Underwriting based on strong knowledge of insurance requirements for lines of business and functionality of current and future software systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
Design, enhance and maintain screen layouts, data dictionary elements, edit definitions, tables, forms attachments, statistical generation, print forms and renewal specifications for proper and efficient issuance systems on a daily basis.
Develop functional requirements and prepare design specifications based on Underwriting requirements for insurance products.
Update automated rate files and rating algorithms to ensure compliance with state rules.
Provide/coordinate support to all departments on problem analysis and training on all automated rating issuance and statistical generation systems.
Coordinate problem resolution and ensure that the development release documentation accurately reflects the contents of new releases/enhancements/problem resolution.
Assist Quality Assurance staff on testing of program changes, line of business installations, and other automated systems. Handle special projects (i.e., statistical reporting to bureaus, on-line user?s documentation, reinsurance, etc.).
Remain current on developments within the insurance industry which may have an impact on both how we process business and technical advances which may assist us in our methods of processing business.

Required Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor?s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science or Business Management preferred and/or three to five years minimum experience in the insurance industry in progressively responsible positions, one year working in, or closely with, Information Services, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; execute determination and/or report on events. Ability to examine and evaluate an extensive variety of technical instructions and data furnished in written, oral, mathematical, schedule or diagram form; present alternative actions in relation to the evaluation; deal with several abstract and concrete variables; convey or exchange information, including giving assignments and/or directions to assistants is essential.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business correspondence, technical journals and manuals, technical documents, and financial reports. Ability to write business correspondence, reports, procedure manuals, project plans. Test plans, status reports, installation sheets and other documentation using prescribed format and conforming to the rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Ability to effectively present information, respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public, and discuss and debate using correct English.
Positive sensitivity and customer service skills and the ability to work as a team member with co-workers, branch offices, users, vendors, outside technical services and the PDA Supervisor are essential in this position.
A. Internally: The incumbent has employee contact daily and must be able to work as a team member to solve problems and exchange information.
B. Externally: The incumbent has occasional contact by phone and in person with vendors, branch offices, agents, outside technical services and sister companies.
Work Environment:
The incumbent is expected to make appropriate use of time and resources while on the job. This includes, but is not limited to, phone use, attendance and promptness standards. The essential functions of this position are performed in an office environment. Occasional travel to vendor sites, branch offices, and sister companies may be required approximately 4 times a year including overnight travel. Travel may be made by company-owned vehicle. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical Demands:
A high degree of keyboarding is required to perform the daily functions of the position. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands and equipment to work, move, or carry objects or materials. The employee may be required to be mobile, including some bending, reaching, and climbing to run PC cables or to move equipment, for brief periods of time. The employee must exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry or otherwise move objects.
