CIS Underwriting Team Leader

Competencies:
Effectively transfer knowledge to the staff for their personal development to improve their underwriting skills and to allow them the opportunity for higher authority levels. Demonstrate leadership in internal and external environment by providing guidance on coverage, service and negotiation issues. Demonstrate advanced selling and negotiation skills and ability to handle difficult negotiating situations. Work with manager to assess the business unit's strengths and vulnerabilities in order to set the business unit's strategy and tactics. Experience in coaching and mentoring underwriters and underwriting associates. Demonstrated proficiency in making decisions. The successful Team Leader will be open to coaching and development and exhibit the willingness move into a Practice Leaders position in the future.

Position Description:
The CIS Leader will be responsible for contributing to the achievement of the Long Island business plan through active producer and book management and by developing an educated and highly motivated staff. The book is $45m. The business plan includes components such as profit, growth and agency/customer management. Specifically, this person will work with the CIS Underwriting Manager to analyze the department's business strengths, weaknesses and opportunities, and to build and implement a strategy that maximizes profitable growth. Key components of managing the team include: monitoring new activities, analysis of MIS, etc. and identification of trends, new and lost business analysis and partnering with the Operations Services Department ensuring the effective coaching/development of UA's, to ensure quality customer service and timely premium payment. The Team Leader will supervise 2 underwriters and manage a book of business for assigned Long Island brokers and agents. Their team will be responsible for marketing, underwriting and servicing new and renewal business. In addition, the Team Leader will take referrals from their staff to share authority in helping the team in analyzing business opportunities. The Team Leader will also travel to the team's assigned agents to assist in new business acquisition and developing effective sales skills. The Team Leader is responsible for motivating, supervising, developing and retaining the staff of underwriters and underwriter associates. Performance management is an important role for the Team Leader and includes assessing proper staffing levels, evaluating staff competencies, building learning and development plans (individual and departmental) and assessing performance. The Team Leader reports to the Long Island CIS Underwriting Manager.
