About the Opportunity
Commercial Lines Underwriter (Business Management Analyst)(Northeast Regional Office located in Branchville, NJ)
Selective is seeking an underwriting professional to serve as a Commercial Lines Underwriter (what we have titled as Business Management Analyst). The Business Management Analyst works on assignments of moderate technical complexity, hazard grade, premium and coordination while building strong relationships with assigned agents. This position is based in our Northeast Regional Office located in beautiful, rural Branchville in northwest New Jersey.
Some essential duties of this position are as follows:Gather, analyze and evaluate risk exposure through risk documentation.Work within authority level to quote, accept, decline, modify and renew risks within territorial assignment in accordance with accepted underwriting guidelines.Answer incoming calls from agents responding to inquiries on coverage, billing questions, and adjustments to policy information based upon assigned authority on Commercial Property and Casualty lines of business.Apply knowledge/understanding of coverage forms, rating plans and guidelines in selection and pricing of individual risks.Ensure adequate pricing of individual risks through proper classification, accuracy of information and adherence to company underwriting standards and philosophy.Work in unison with Agents, Regional Underwriters and AMS(s) and other departments within Selective to grow and maintain a profitable book of business based on agency/territory/team assignments.Effectively communicate underwriting decisions and appetite to agents.Conduct continuous profit and growth analysis by territory and agency as assigned.Work with assigned AMS and the Team Lead to develop and achieve business plans and team goals for assigned territory of agents.Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Team Leader, peers and agents.Be able and willing to periodically travel to agents, policyholders, and other identified locations.Provide guidance to Agents and other departments regarding various underwriting information.
To be successful in this position the following qualifications are required: A minimum of 3 years experience as a multi-line underwriter (must know all commercial lines)Excellent interpersonal and communication skillsGood analytical, judgment and decision-making abilitySuperior service and customer-focus skillsAbility to keyboard in an accurate/efficient manner. Experienced/proficient with standard business software applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook). We require and support the ongoing professional development of our Underwriting Professionals. For this position a candidate must possess an approved certification(s) identified as acceptable in Selective?s Commercial Underwriting Certification Policy or a demonstrated commitment to achieve certification within 3 years of hire date. Some examples of acceptable certifications include AU, ARM, CPCU, CIC, and CRM.
