Commercial Underwriting Specialist

If you are an experienced Commercial Underwriting, here is an opportunity to join Nationwide Insurance's New Business Support team in Carmel, IN. We looking for candidates who build strong relationships with their agents and enjoy assisting new agents.

JOB SUMMARY:
Accepts, retains and prices any and all commercial insurance risks including those of a more complex nature in conformance with established underwriting policies, practices and standards. Provides specialized underwriting service, counsel and training of a highly technical and professional nature on all commercial property and casualty lines. May work specifically with Fidelity and Surety risks. Under limited direction, works within significant limits of authority on highly complex commercial underwriting assignments. Provides technical advice to lower level underwriters and other functional areas. May function as first level supervisor or group leader.

Reports to Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager
Commercial Underwriters Bands C-E, 0-10 Total number of employees that report directly and indirectly to this job.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties cover what are generally believed to be principal and essential functions of the job. Specific circumstances may allow or require some people assigned to the job to perform a somewhat different combination of duties.

1. Functions as top level technical underwriter and/or supervisor/group leader in a underwriting unit. Assists in the coordination of Sales, Claims, Underwriting, Loss Control and Administration activities as required on any commercial risk.
2. Determines applicable policy contracts and forms. Interprets and analyzes more complex or unusual coverage forms.
3. Responsible for the control of loss frequency and that portion of severity that can be controlled in the risk taking process.
4. Measures the relationship of price to hazard thereby determining those risks that the companies can profitably insure. Coordinates rate revision input.
5. Maintains quality and quantity of work at prescribed standards including the work of subordinates when supervisory duties are assigned.
6. Develops, designs and assists, as necessary, in the presentation of complex insurance proposals or programs.
7. Conducts training for new underwriters and cross training programs for experienced underwriters. Provides quality checks on these programs as needed.
8. Participates in training for claims and sales personnel through district meetings, field visitations or other field functions.
9. Performs supervisory functions as assigned.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Undergraduate studies in business administration or insurance. Participation in professional development coursework such as IIA or CPCU preferred.
Experience: Six years commercial underwriting experience. Some positions may require Bonds underwriting experience.
Knowledge: Commercial underwriting policy, practices and procedures. Rating plans and concepts. Commercial insurance lines offered by the Company. Reinsurance, including facultative reinsurance. Sales, claims, service center, and legal issues involving commercial contracts. Some positions may require knowledge of Fidelity and Surety products.
Skills/Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form. Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to work-related problems. Ability to analyze insurance risks to determine the degree of acceptability, ability to analyze and monitor high level (state/district) trending data and develop appropriate action plans. Ability to operate PC and related software. Ability to train and lead lower level commercial underwriters in all aspects of underwriting and processing functions, ability to advise agents and agency staff on commercial contracts, procedures, and business practices.

JOB CONDITIONS:
Overtime Eligibility: Exempt and Not eligible for overtime.
Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Occasional travel. Extended and/or non-standard work house are needed (exempt). May require valid drivers license.
