Compliance/Litigation Legal Assistant

Assist the attorneys in the coordination of all company litigation; review and prepare responses to subpoenas; conduct legal research; draft pleadings and organize files, assist in discovery efforts (including obtaining records and reviewing documents), interview and prepare clients and witnesses as directed; keep an accurate tracking and follow-up system in order to timely file court papers and respond to time-sensitive documents; coordinate scheduling as the need arises. Assist in agent collection and subrogation recoveries; assist in investigating and preparing responses to insurance department inquiries.



Provide compliance support to Union Central insurance operations as requested by UNIFI Insurance Compliance Officer and managing attorney. This includes implementing compliance policies and procedures throughout the Company; assisting other Company departments in interpreting and implementing state and federal laws and regulations and in providing necessary training within the Company and with the field; coordinating IMSA recertification process and ongoing IMSA compliance. Act as Anti-Money Laundering (AML) point person and coordinator; oversee necessary procedures for compliance with the Patriot Act and Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC); assist in preparation and presentation of compliance training and meetings; review variable products for suitability.

SIGNIFICANT JOB DUTIES:

Review subpoenas by reviewing service, information requested, and assemble appropriate response

Review and accurately assess pleadings and motions; draft appropriate pleadings, motions, and responses, standardizing forms such as answers, interrogatories and other pleadings when practical

Investigate, gather, review, and organize facts; summarize cases.

Summarize depositions and discovery.

Review and organize responses to interrogatories and requests for production.

Arrange and coordinate timing of deposition.

Coordinate litigation activity with local counsel as needed.

Maintain litigation files.

Coordinate activities for collecting, analyzing, and reporting Company information requested by state regulatory examiners.

Coordinate IMSA recertification process and ongoing IMSA compliance.

Act as Anti-Money Laundering (AML) point person and coordinator.

Oversee necessary procedures for compliance with the Patriot Act and Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC).

Assist in preparation and presentation of compliance training and meetings.

Review variable products for suitability.

Monitor and evaluate LIMRA CAP surveys and perform necessary follow-through.

Use written, verbal, and electronic forms of communication in a clear, professional and prompt manner with attorneys, clients, outside vendors, local counsel and opposing counsel.

Coordinate compliance activities for the Company as directed by the UNIFI Compliance Officer.

Completes special projects as assigned.

Must have sense of urgency, attentive to details, well organized, and able to multi-task in a high energy environment.

The person in this position has the express duty to comply with all applicable insurance laws and regulations and with approved company policies, practices and procedures related to ethical market conduct activities. This person also has the responsibility to report immediately any known or suspected violation of laws, regulations and company policie

 

Education: For the litigation responsibilities, the preferred incumbent will have completed a paralegal course or college coursework in areas specifically related to the position, with 2 to 3 years? previous experience as a legal assistant, or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Familiarity with litigation and insurance laws and regulations is required. For the compliance responsibilities, the incumbent must have, preferably, NASD Series 7 and 24 licenses (Series 6 and 26 would be acceptable) or able to obtain the licenses within a reasonable time of occupying the position, as determined by the manager. The incumbent must have a minimum of 3 years? experience at any level of compliance. Compliance experience in the insurance industry is considered a plus. The incumbent must be willing and able to travel when necessary (approximately 10 to 15% of the time).
