Life Insurance Underwriter

Job Purpose: Minimizes risks by accepting and rejecting insurance applications; modifying insurance coverage.

Duties:

* Completes insurance applications by adhering to established underwriting standards.

* Determines degree of risk by examining application forms, inspection reports, actuarial reports, and medical reports.

* Evaluates applicant factors by reviewing applicant financial standing, age, occupation, and accident experience and value and condition of property.

* Evaluates possibility of losses by determining amount of insurance in force on single risk or group of closely related risks; estimating possibility of losses from catastrophe or excessive insurance.

* Determines distribution of risks by using rate books, tables, code books, computer records, and other reference materials.

* Gathers information by communicating with field representatives, insurance brokers, medical personnel, and other insurance or inspection companies.

* Provides information by answering questions and requests; quoting rates; explaining company underwriting policies.

* Resolves discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information.

* Determines insurance coverage by declining excessive risks; authorizing reinsurance on high-risk policies; decreasing policy values; specifying applicable exclusions and endorsements.

* Prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.

* Contributes to organization effectiveness by identifying short-term and long-range issues that must be addressed; providing information and commentary pertinent to deliberations; recommending options and courses of action; implementing directives

* Maintains inter- and intradepartmental work flow by fostering a spirit of cooperation.

* Maintains professional underwriting and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

* Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
