Manager, Research
Description: Responsible for managing and executing highly visible and comprehensive SBU projects, with respect to the introduction or enhancement of product offerings. Analyzes profitability of risk segments, develops sophisticated and innovative underwriting and pricing solutions and ensures expected performance of new initiatives. Manages team with highly technical and analytical skill sets. Responsibilities may also include:
1.Develops new underwriting and pricing programs to assist meeting SBU goal of being an industry leader in pricing sophistication. Manages the maintenance of underwriting and pricing programs, including model rebuilds and program enhancements. Additional responsibilities include providing oversight and direction to systems liaisons (gatekeeper to all system changes), assessing impact to program changes, and providing training documentation when needed.
2.Manages 3rd party vendors to develop or enhance Liberty Mutual products.
3.Consults with regional and other departments to ensure that all decisions are made with complete and comprehensive analysis. Guarantees that analysis is accurate and timely, recommendations have been formulated and agreed upon, and all parties have been involved in communications.
4.Conceptualizes immediate and long-range needs of the SBU with respect to project mission by translating business objectives into project goals. Translates SBU needs into a comprehensive project plan which ensures successful project completion.
5.Negotiates projects objectives and direction with SBU heads, Division Senior Vice Presidents and Managers of such departments as Information Systems, Corporate Research, Actuarial, Underwriting, Claims, Sales, Legal, and Human Resources.
6.Prepares periodic written reports for and makes presentations to Senior Managers regarding project status. Keeps senior management informed of project direction and renegotiates direction as necessary.
7.Directs assigned staff in various departments and divisions to ensure the completion of work in a timely and efficient manner.
8.Provides support for negotiations with external agencies/organizations, such as law firms and state insurance departments, regarding sensitive and/or complex issues.
9. Responsible for monitoring and controlling expenses throughout the year for the department's budget.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, advanced degree or professional designation preferred; minimum 7 to 9 years of underwriting/actuarial experience, including 2 to 3 years of managerial experience. Excellent talent management, project management, process improvement, written and oral communication, presentation, analytical and management skills also required. Ability to influence Senior Management. Strong understanding of potential impact to other departments such as Finance UW, Claims, Stats, IT, Legal and Sales based on actions taken is required.
