This position is located in downtown Des Moines, IA at 1100 Locust St.

JOB SUMMARY: Specializes in the settlement of severe and complex personal lines and limited commercial property, casualty, material damage claims, and/or errors and omissions including severe and complex bodily injury, extensive material damage and/or questionable liability. Or may specialize in the handling of personal lines and limited commercial lines property, casualty, material damage and/or errors and omissions claims that are in litigation. Responsible for coverage investigation, liability evaluation, negotiation and settlement resolution. For claims that are in litigation, provides direction to defense counsel in the handling of lawsuits.

RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Manager or Director. No reports directly or indirectly.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Handles to conclusion severe and complex personal lines and limited commercial lines property, casualty, material damage claims, and/or errors and omissions including severe and complex bodily injury, extensive material damage and/or questionable liability. Or may specialize in the handling of personal lines and limited commercial lines property, casualty, material damage and/or errors and omissions claims that are in litigation.
2. Authorizes and/or approves all claim payments within granted authority associated with the claim, which may include litigation expense.
3. Opens, closes and adjusts reserves in accordance with Company practices designed to ensure reserve authority. Determines special reserves when necessary.
4. Plans and implements all time schedules necessary to promptly and effectively conclude all assigned files in accordance with company guidelines.
5. For claims that are in litigation - May use the trial division when appropriate. Assigns cases to outside vendors and counsel as necessary. Submits trial reports, contingent liability reports, reinsurance reports and other information to management as appropriate.
6. Prepares/reviews reservation of rights, non-waiver agreements and denials of coverage when appropriate.
7. Maintains current knowledge of all insurance lines; court decisions which may impact the claims function; current guidelines in the claims function; and policy changes and modifications. This may require attendance at various seminars or training sessions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Undergraduate degree in areas such as business or insurance preferred. Law degree desirable for some positions. Professional development such as IIA or CPCU preferred. Applicable certifications where required. State licensing where required.
EXPERIENCE: Seven years claims handling experience. Some positions may require experience handling litigated claims.
KNOWLEDGE: Proven knowledge of the best claims practices used to resolve severe claims. Proven knowledge of insurance contracts and medical terminology and the legal aspects of court procedures affecting legal liability for all lines of insurance.
SKILLS / COMPETENCIES: Analytical skills used to make independent decisions and resolve conflict; proven ability to coordinate with defense counsel in the handling of cases involving serious and sometimes complex liability issues. Oral and written communication skills for contact and negotiation with all policyholders, claimants, repair persons, attorneys, physicians, agents, and the general public. Organizational skills to effectively establish work priorities in accordance with best claims practices. Ability to operate personal computer and related software.

JOB CONDITIONS:
WORKING CONDITIONS: Office or field environment. Representatives may be required to operate an automobile and have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record. Must be able to make physical inspections of accident scenes and property loss sites. Must be able to climb ladders, balance at various heights, stoop, bend and/or crawl to inspect vehicles and structures. Must be able to work out-of- doors in all types of weather. Must be willing to work irregular hours and to travel with possible overnight requirements. May be on-call. Must be available to work catastrophes (CAT) requiring travel to CAT site with multiple onsite responsibilities and/or for extended periods of time. Extended and/or non-standard hours as required.
