Senior Commercial Underwriter
JOB SUMMARY: Accepts, retains and prices commercial insurance risks in conformance with established underwriting policies, practices and standards. Provides specialized underwriting and underwriting training in at least three major lines.(*) Works within broad limits and authority on commercial underwriting assignments of high technical complexity and consideration. Provides guidance and assistance to lower level underwriters and other functional areas. *Major line of insurance is defined by one of the following: General Liability and Workers' Compensation; Commercial Fire, Boiler, and Machinery and Package; Commercial Auto and Garage; Crime/Fidelity and Surety, Inland Marine and Umbrella.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties cover what are generally believed to be principal and essential functions of the job. Specific circumstances may allow or require some people assigned to the job to perform a somewhat different combination of duties.
1. Accepts, retains and prices commercial risks for assigned lines of business in accordance with established underwriting policies, practices and standards.
2. Determines applicable policy contracts and forms. Interprets and analyzes more complex or unusual coverage forms.
3. Responsible for profitability and growth through: a. properly classifying and pricing a risk. b. managing loss frequency and that portion of loss severity that can be controlled. c. risk acceptance and renewal retention. d. developing, implementing and monitoring action plans as appropriate. e. accountability for the quality of assigned portfolio.
4. Becomes proficient in many lines of commercial insurance with increasing emphasis on larger accounts.
5. Participates in training for new underwriters. Provides quality control checks in conjunction with these training programs as needed.
6. Participates in training for claims and sales personnel through district meetings, field visitations or other field functions.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Undergraduate studies in business administration or insurance. Participation in professional development coursework (e.g., IIA, CPCU) preferred.
Experience: Three years commercial underwriter experience. Some positions may require Bonds Underwriting experience.
Knowledge: Commercial underwriting policies, practices and procedures. Rating plans and plan concepts. Treaty and facultative reinsurance. Commercial insurance processing and underwriting systems. Some positions may require knowledge of Fidelity and Surety products.
Skills/Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form. Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to work-related problems. Ability to analyze insurance risks to determine the degree of acceptability. Ability to operate PC and related software. Ability to advise agents and agency staff on commercial contracts, procedures and business practices.

Overtime Eligibility: Exempt and Not eligible for overtime.
Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Occasional travel, may require valid drivers license. Extended and/or non-standard work hours are needed (exempt).
