General Summary:


This position reports to Underwriting management and is mentored by Senior Underwriting Resources. The Sr.
Disability Underwriter is responsible for the evaluation and pricing of group disability prospects which lead to the
profitable acquisition of new cases. The Sr. Disability Underwriter also maintains an inforce block of business and
is responsible for the profitable retention of inforce cases. The Sr. Disability Underwriter is part of a team of
professionals who establish and maintain productive relationships with certain of UnumProvident's field offices.
There is generally a primary field office assignment. This position may also assist with the training, technical
development and mentoring less seasoned underwriters.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

 

*Support of an organization focused on high quality risk assessment.

*Make appropriate business decisions and recommendations on cases.

*Analyze and identify early and ongoing risk trends on assigned block of business and make appropriate

recommendations for addressing these.

*Develop personal credibility with key brokers, customers, peers, sales reps and internal partners.

*Support the achievement of specific top-line and bottom-line growth.

*Select and retain customers through accurate risk assessment and appropriate premium levels that meet profit,

persistency and sales objectives

*Demonstrate decisiveness, creativity and accuracy in risk selection

*Coordinate with cross-functional areas when necessary to meet business needs.

*May perform other duties as assigned

 

Job Specifications:

 

*College degree plus three to five years of disability underwriting experience.

*Strong expertise in risk selection

*Mastery of designated product line including product provisions, plan design and pricing and contractual benefits.

*Demonstrated consistency in performance over a sustained period of time.

*Creative problem solving/analytical reasoning skills

*Demonstrated solid understanding of both top-line and bottom-line objectives and is able to manage both

*Knowledge of the sales/distribution process

*Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

*Demonstrated ability to be persuasive and to negotiate

*Strong mentoring and coaching skills

*Demonstrated leadership

*Demonstrated knowledge of industry and market trends
