Sr. Actuarial Asst./Claims

Job Description: POSITION SUMMARY: The Claims Senior Actuarial Assistant is a newly created position reporting to the Chief Financial Officer of the Claims Department. This highly visible and challenging position will be seen as a key member of the Claims Financial team supporting significant strategic initiatives around the Claims operating model and the implementation of a new Claims system. This position will also have a reporting relationship to the lead actuary supporting line of business reserving practices. Under the Hanover Actuarial Rotation program, actuarial opportunities may be available upon successful completion of an 18-24 month assignment in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES of the Claims Senior Actuarial Assistant:


Gain a complete understanding of the claims handling procedures for each line of business and to communicate this information effectively to members of the financial and actuarial community

Perform and prepare various actuarial analyses to monitor key claim statistics such as settlement rates, reporting lags, changes in average case reserves, loss adjustment expense to loss ratios, etc.

Provide real-time technical expertise in the measurement, strategy, and management of catastrophic events

Works with the finance and actuarial departments to communicate results of actuarial analysis to Claims product management areas

Provides consultation and clarification on actuarial methods and risk issues

Assist actuarial loss reserving unit during quarterly reserve analysis

Participate in a frontline claim handling training curriculum, including in-the-field claim handling experience

REQUIREMENTS:

2 - 5 CAS exams preferred

Bachelors Degree with 2 - 4 years experience

Strong and broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of actuarial science

Thorough knowledge of actuarial statistics and assumptions used for modeling cost, risk and revenue trends

Very skilled in the use of PC spreadsheet applications

Excel, Visual Basic for Excel; SAS is desirable
