JOB SUMMARY:

Under general guidance, the Senior Underwriter provides underwriting services to group clients to determine premium rates for employer groups and ensure these groups remain on a profitable basis. Includes the ability to generate community rates, experience adjusted community rates and pure experience rates for their assigned book of business, including groups of 100+ employees and those groups that are 100% experience rated.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Schedule, monitor and control all renewal activity for assigned book of business.Gather and examine appropriate documentation and data required to calculate and produce a rate renewal package, which includes running IRMA reports and queries.Gather and examine appropriate documentation and data required to calculate and produce ASO renewals.Prepare initial underwriting and renewal rates for all PHS products, employing underwriting judgment and ensuring compliance with underwriting regulations and current rate filings.Write internal management summaries for case review and/or appeals.Construct final renewal rate packages and report financial findings to the sales department in a precise and easily understandable format. Write letters and reports to explain renewals and detailed technical issues to both customers and other departments while acting as the financial arm of the renewal/sales team. Additionally, in this regard, work closely, on a proactive basis, with sales to develop renewal and proposal strategies for large groups.Gather and examine appropriate documentation and data necessary to develop premium rate proposals, including the evaluation of other carrier claims experience and appropriate blending with community rates.Make independent renewal decision in accordance with underwriting authority limit guidelines and perform in the peer review function for underwriters.Meets with consultants, brokers and customers to discuss renewals/proposals and to negotiate as required.Consult with other departments such as actuarial, legal and product development, and participate in project meetings with other departments as required.Constantly interact with sales, in explaining renewals, obtaining information and team building.Maintain appropriate documentation and special reports as required. Maintain underwriting files in the format currently in place at FHS plans nationally.Participate in special projects within the underwriting department as required, as well as participate in training programs for account executives and account managers.



REQUIREMENTS:

Education:?
Bachelor's degree from a four year accredited institution.

Certification/License:
HIAA or CEBS certification preferred.

Experience:Two to five years of related experience and/or training with at least one year as an underwriter or equivalent position.Experience working with PCs is required. Candidates must have experience in a Microsoft Windows environment including Word and Excel. Other system knowledge is helpful.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, technical procedures or government regulations.Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence.Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one or small group situations with customers, sales, underwriting management and other employees of the company.Problem solving skills are essential to the position.Ability to calculate figures such as discounts, compound interest, proportions and percentages and apply basic concepts of business mathematics and algebra in underwriting problems. In-depth knowledge of mathematical applications used in underwriting functions is required.Ability to work effectively with deadlines is essential.
