Underwriting Manager
Description:
Performs case-specific risk assessments, rate development, and customer presentations on complex book of business.
Develops and monitors account earning plans to achieve growth and profitability.
Couples with management to develop and drive market and sales strategies, product development, pricing, and underwriting policy and procedure guidelines.
Mentors less experienced underwriters on risk analysis, rate development, and consultative underwriting responsibilities.
Serves as technical resource for less experience underwriters on complex issues.In-depth rating, product, and financial knowledge..General Purpose
Assist in the development of best practices underwriting procedures and processes. Accountable for the implementation and adherence to approved underwriting standards, including the execution of pricing and renewal strategies, persistency targets and attainment of profit plan goals. Work closely with Account Management, Specialty Business Development and Senior Director, Accident & Specialty to ensure that business is managed appropriately to meet CGI objectives, while assisting our clients/partners in growing their business and meeting their goals. Lead and manage the Specialty Programs? underwriting team, including the setting of attainable, but challenging performance measurements, career development coaching and mentoring and retention of key underwriting personnel.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
? Understands the marketplace, producers, product portfolio and demographics of Specialty business.
? Assist in the development and implementation of new business and renewal rate strategies. Helps drive changes in UW policy/pricing methodology based on data.
? Directs case assignments and workflow of staff. Assist in development of metrics to monitor and report on staff productivity and effectiveness.
? Approves within departmental standards, deviations from the formula/model calculated rate.
? Accountable for maintaining highest level of data integrity for databases.
? Leads staff of 3-5 underwriters by maintaining regular communication, training, coaching and ensuring that underwriters administering their duties in compliance with all laws and regulations.
? Establishes and maintains relationships with existing producers, TPAs and MGAs to assist in the management of the in-force business and develop opportunities for further growth.
? Responsible for integration and continuous improvement of the underwriting process.
? Assists in the annual development of strategic business and financial projections for Specialty Programs assuring goals to be attained are consistent with departmental & divisional financial goals.
? Assists in the establishment of a Specialty Programs? marketing plan.
? Achieves persistency targets, manages expenses to plan and assists in achievement of Specialty Programs profit goals.
? Works with other Specialty staff in developing new product offers and updating of current product offers.
? Pulls together appropriate resources, working in association with the Specialty Programs account management and business development teams, as well other areas throughout the division to service the accounts and resolve customer issues.
? Working with the Account Management staff, assists in the management of on-going business and contractual obligations for all Specialty accounts, including continual negotiation of contractual arrangements between CGI and our clients and partners. Ensure that plans and contractual obligations are consistent with business or participation goals, including management of expense budgets..

Qualifications:
? A minimum of five years of Underwriting experience in the Specialty Programs or Group Insurance marketplace OR significant financial experience in another financially related field. In-depth knowledge of CGI products, markets, and regulatory environment is a plus.
? General business acumen is also essential. College degree or equivalent work experience required.
? A minimum of two years successful management experience required including the proven ability to select, motivate, develop and retain assigned staff.
? Proven negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Ability to influence people in all levels of the Specialty underwriting team, as well as in matrix management environments.
? Clear results orientation backed by specific accomplishments.
? Excellent written and verbal communication skills with emphasis on superior influencing skills.
? Recognized as a leader and expert in underwriting practice
? Demonstrated consultative selling skills
? Thinks and acts strategically in complex situations.
