The mission of the BW Online Copy Desk is to ensure that stories published on the Web site are as good as they can be and have display language that is as informative and engaging as possible. The position of Copy Chief is essential to maintaining those standards. As the enforcer of BusinessWeek.com’s editorial standards, Copy Chief will be specifically expected to: Be intimately familiar with BusinessWeek style and ensure that all work that emerges from the Online copydesk conforms with it   Oversee and coordinate the copydesk staff, setting their priorities, proofing their work, and overseeing the editing of all copy that appears on the Web site   Identify libelous or potentially libelous stories and alert the editor-in-chief and/or channel editors Track persistent problems with copy and bring them to the attention of channel editors Ensure that all display text, headlines, and decks accurately convey the meaning of the story and entice readers to click through to the story.  To this end, a keen understanding of the ways portal partners host and point to BW.com content is imperative, as is an appreciation of the importance of key words to optimizing BW.com content for search. Monitor daily changes to the story list as the day progresses  Prioritize copyediting tasks to meet the channel-publishing schedule, giving highest priority to high-impact content, e.g. breaking news and features that will drive traffic Schedule and supervise copy editors and maintain a daily / nightly log of errors and issues submitted at the end of each shift to the editor-in-chief and the operations director Assist in the hiring of copy editors and ensure that all copy editors are effectively utilized and receive ongoing training Participate in the customization of the Content Management System by making recommendations to the tech team
