Director - Software Development - Targeted Content

Amazon.com is looking for a Director of Targeted Content to drive key customer programs focused on increasing customer frequency.

In January 2006, Amazon began a beta for the Plogs program. Plogs provides a "personalized web log" for every customer on the Amazon.com home page, providing relevant, targeted posts from authors, artists, and Amazon. This beta just scratches the surface of what Amazon can do to provide customers interesting and relevant information from multiple sources - authors, artists, other customers, and Amazon all have targeted messages to send, and plogs is a unique channel for encouraging repeat visits. Our relationships with our customers and with our authors, artists, and vendors enable us to deliver a differentiated experience.

The Director of Targeted Content will first be focused on synthesizing and delivering on the vision of worldwide plogs - unique targeted content for every customer. You will build new content sources, improve targeting, create a wholly new customer experience at Amazon, and improve the architecture as the team serves thousands of posts to millions of customers. You will manage the targeted content business, developing and maintaining metrics to measure the success of the program and its impact on Amazon revenue. You will also develop unique revenue streams, including third-party advertising, targeted at the customers and their posts. You will work with other merchandising channels to provide both shared learnings and shared communication. You will manage technical leaders, program managers, and engineers, and continue to grow the staff significantly. You will regularly interact with the CEO and Senior Leadership.



Candidates for this role should have


?

Substantive experience building innovative, complex customer experiences, ideally but not necessarily consumer-facing
Strong technical credentials, with at least 5 years leading or managing software development teams, ideally with some hands-on architectural or distributed systems experience
Business analysis acumen, with substantive experience measuring the success of a complex business and proposing new business opportunities
A record of great hiring of technical and business team members and leaders
Operational support and passion, with experience in establishing, measuring, and meeting service level agreements, improving the availability, performance, and quality of systems, and managing complex on-the-fly operational concerns
A track record of communicating well with executives and non-technical leaders
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or the equivalent strongly preferred
