Sr. Database Engineer - TLRTS NSS Oracle/UDB

Behind every great on-line eCommerce site and technology service is an equally great database.  These databases provide mission critical data processing services and it takes highly skilled Database Administrator?s to build and maintain these systems.  To meet the challenges of our fast growing business products and services lines, we need to grow our DBA team.  We?re looking for exceptional Senior Database Engineer?s who are interested in using the latest database technologies to deliver industry leading systems, with results that go directly to the bottom line.

 

This team supports our eCommerce and corporate infrastructure application databases.  These systems use Oracle and IBM DB2/UDB database software running on Linux, AIX and Solaris. 

 

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Technology (60%)

Database Software Installation and Upgrades

?  Identify server hardware, software and configurations necessary for running Oracle and DB2 in an optimal fashion.

?  Develop new processes, utilize and refine existing processes for database software installation and configuration

Database Requirements Analysis and Design

?  Enforce and refine database standards

?  Work with development teams to design, or review designs for new databases/database changes.

?  Assess and identify database server resource requirements

?  Develop and maintain data models

Database Monitoring and Tuning

?  Lead efforts to develop and improve procedures for automated monitoring

?  Review performance stats and recommend changes for tuning database, server, and storage configurations, as well as application SQL 

Database Backup and Recovery

?  Participate in periodic backup audits, including test restores ensuring all databases and associated logs are being backed-up

?  Lead requirements assessments for backup and recovery

?  Develop new backup and recovery processes that leverages new techniques and technology

Database Problem Research and Resolution

?  Assume ownership of database related problems; pursue problem resolution and root cause analysis

?  Coordinate interaction with vendors in critical database problem situations

Database Support

?  Participate in a 24x7 pager rotation; rotations can vary from weekly to daily hand-offs.  The rotations include providing DBA support on weekends and holidays, as well as providing Subject Matter Expert support to the on call DBA as needed.  DBA on call work includes performing off-hour maintenance operations as well as dealing with after hours troubleshooting.

Other

?  Learn and stay current on the many facets of the corporate infrastructure applications as well as the features and functionality of UDB and Oracle;

?  Use established TLRTS support processes and tools

?  Evaluate current technology and recommend tools/processes for improving availability, reliability, stability and work efficiencies

Leadership & Communication (20%)

?  Ability to work well with different staff levels within and out of core competency.

?  Ability to translate highly technical solutions/problems to audiences at varying technical levels.

?  Strong ability to prepare and present technical documentation.

?  Communicates in a professional manner when interacting across staff levels and internal/external customers.

?  Understands the importance of communicating risk assessment.

Management & Administration (10%)

?  Will provide technical process leadership to the DBA team.

?  Ability to contribute and influence a variety of projects concurrently.

?  Provide input on technical team goals

?  Support employee technical development with technical team members

Business Acumen and Strategy (10%)

?  Has broad knowledge of West/TLR products

?  Proactively generates relevant ideas for new and improved use of technology

?  Understands the impact of new projects and technical impacts to supported systems

?  Collaborates with peers, architects and managers to determine project strategy and how best to implement/support it

QUALIFICATIONS:

?  Bachelor's Degree ? Computer Science, technical or Engineering degree preferred

?  5+ years experience with Oracle on Unix platforms

?  Minimum of 3 years experience with UNIX shell scripting, experience with Linux preferable

?  Basic data modeling

?  Demonstrated project management skills; ability to set scope and deliver quality results; manage multiple projects simultaneously; adapt to changing priorities

?  Strong analytical and trouble shooting skills

?  Strong quantitative, analytical, communication and verbal skills with a strong customer service focus

?  Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently toward assigned goals

?  Preferable 5+ years in a development or support organization supporting large applications
