The Maryland-National Capital Park Police was founded in 1953; it has grown into a diverse police department with an authorized strength of 102 sworn officers and 25 civilian staff members. The Park Police is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency (CALEA). The agency was awarded this prestigious recognition by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. The Park Police secures and protects over 23,000 acres of park property in Prince George's County, Maryland on a 24-hour basis through the prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals and enforcement of criminal and motor vehicle laws of the state and enforcement of park regulations.

 

Examination:

Applicants must pass the Commission's written Police Officer Candidate examination, and an oral interview conducted by a Police Assessment Board. A background investigation will be completed on each Candidate and the Candidate must meet the Commission's suitability requirements.

Medical and Physical Standards:

Park Police Candidates must be able to successfully pass physical and psychological examinations based on the Commission standards for Park Police administered by a Commission approved medical physician and psychologist prior to appointment. Candidates must also be able to complete drug screening as mandated by the Maryland State Training Commission.

Holiday Pay - Double time and a half.
Overtime Pay - Time and a half.
Court Compensation - Off-duty 3hrs. minimum at overtime rate or comp leave.
Shift Differential - $1.35 per hour evenings; $2.15 per hour midnights.
Uniform Allowance - $1,070 per year/$1,120 per year Special Services Personnel.
Annual Leave - 1-3 years = 120 hrs per year; 4-14 years = 160 hrs per year 15+ years = 208 hrs per year.

Take Home Vehicle - Bi-County Off Duty Use - Per Division Regulations.
Retirement - 60% with 25 years credited service; annual COLA.
Life Insurance and A.D&D - 2X base salary $200,000 max./Plus $50,000.

Graded Patrol Officer Program - Opportunity to obtain promotions through the rank of corporal through a non competitive process.

Multi-Lingual Pay - Proficient officers $800.00 lump sum payment (testing required)
