The Alaska State Troopers are Alaska's primary law enforcement agency, whose responsibilities encompass the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws. The mandate of the Department is to prevent loss of life and property as a result of illegal or unsafe acts

The Department of Public Safety's largest component is the Division of Alaska State Troopers, which has approximately 350 commissioned members. Troopers are assigned in one of five Detachments or one of three Statewide Bureaus. The Statewide Bureaus are the Alaska Bureau of Investigations (ABI), the Alaska Bureau of Wildlife Enforcement (ABWE), and the Alaska Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Enforcement (ABADE). The Alaska State Troopers also have a number of specialized functions including the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), the service of criminal warrants and civil documents, prisoner transportation, and conducting search and rescue missions.

Alaska State Troopers serve throughout the State, with many personnel being assigned in remote areas of Alaska. Responsibilities include the enforcement of all criminal and traffic laws, identification and apprehension of violators, and the prevention of crime and traffic violations. Troopers protect Alaska's fish and wildlife resources through the enforcement of laws and regulations governing use of natural resources within Alaska and its adjacent waters.

The core missions of the Alaska State Troopers are:

Requirements:

1. Never been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence

NOTE: This position requires the use of firearm or ammunition. In accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL-104-208), if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold a State Trooper Recruit Position. A"misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" means an offense that:
a.is a misdemeanor under Federal or State Law; and
b.has, as an element the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.

2. Be a High School graduate or possess a GED certificate

3. Be 21 years or older at the time of employment

4. Must posses a valid driver?s license

5. During the past 10 years (unless you were under 21 years of age at the time of use), have not used an illegal controlled substance other than marijuana

6. During the past year, have not used marijuana (unless you were under 21 years of age at the time of use)

7. Have not illegally manufactured, transported, or sold a controlled substance (unless you were under 21 years of age at the time of the act AND the act occurred more than 10 years ago)

8. Have never been convicted of a felony (by civilian court of Alaska, the United States, or another state or territory, or by a military court)

9. During the past 10 years, have not been convicted (by civilian court of Alaska, the United States, or another state or territory, or by a military court) of a misdemeanor crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another person

10. During the past 10 years, have not been convicted (by civilian court of Alaska, the United States, or another state or territory, or by a military court) of two or more driving-while-intoxicated offenses or chemical test refusals

11.During the past 10 years, have not been convicted (by civilian court of Alaska, the United States, or another state or territory, or by a military court) of a misdemeanor crime of dishonesty or moral turpitude.
