Assistant General Counsel

The Assistant General Counsel assists the General Counsel in providing legal advice to the MFA; prepares and reviews a variety of legal documents; manages various legal matters; and acts as a liaison with outside counsel. The Assistant General Counsel advises the General Counsel, senior leadership and internal clients on all legal aspects of the Corporation including, compliance, litigation, insurance, risk management, managed care and contractual arrangements.

1. Provides legal review and/or advice to MFA on varied legal matters, including compliance, contracts, human resources law, litigation management, and risk management.
2. Drafts and negotiates contractual agreements, including hospital/physician arrangements, information technology/services contracts, and vendor contracts, consistent with applicable laws and regulations and MFA governance structure.
3. Assist in management and oversight of corporate compliance program. Provides advice on corporate compliance for MFA with federal and state regulatory requirements.
4. Assists with compliance and regulatory projects, which may involve investigations or development of system-wide team and action plans.
5. Assists with management and oversight of litigation and risk management program.
6. Assists with the development of model legal documents.
7. Keeps abreast of changes in legal requirements and ensures compliance.
8. Develops, participates in and conducts corporate and system-wide education on various topics of current legal interest.
9. Prepares educational bulletins on emerging health care legal issues.
10. Serves as liaison with outside counsel.
11. Coordinates and reviews the work of legal assistants and compliance analysts and managers on a periodic basis.
12. Assists with special projects, as assigned.
13. Executes other legal duties as assigned by the General Counsel.

Required Skills:
(1) A law degree from an accredited institution; license to practice in the District of Columbia is required.
(2) At least three years experience in health care law within a large law firm, corporate or health care law department, or other legal setting is required.
(3) Significant knowledge of laws and regulations regarding health care
regulatory, corporate, and transactional matters (e.g., Stark, Anti-
kickback, HIPAA, Medicare).
