Associate Legal Editor

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) headquartered in Alexandria, VA is the world's largest association devoted to human resource management. SUMMARY

Edits, writes and posts articles of interest and importance to HR professionals for SHRM?s Workplace Law Resources online Focus Area, with emphasis on state/local employment law news. Researches, reports, develops, writes and edits articles about employment law developments and trends for other SHRM publications, web pages and e-newsletters.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Edits and writes articles for the Workplace Law Resources Focus Area, including its State Workplace Law Resources pages, and HR News Online, HR Magazine and other SHRM publications and web pages. Assists editorial staff with law-related stories as appropriate and suggests possible story topics.

 

Prepares state-specific articles for listing in the HR Week e-newsletter.

 

Prepares semimonthly Workplace Law Bulletin e-newsletter.

 

Edits HR Solutions articles for weekly online postings and monthly publication in HR Magazine.

 

Follows HR employment law developments and trends at state, regional, national and global level by reading, research, interviewing sources and attending conferences. Identifies and reports on significant decisions of state and federal courts and administrative agencies, pending and enacted state and federal laws and administrative rulemaking.

 

Works cooperatively with Editorial, Knowledge Center, Internet Operations and Art & Production staff to ensure that articles are posted and/or printed appropriately and coordinated with other content.

 

Edits and performs other assignments as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

At least five years experience at news and analytical writing, with at least two years in legal affairs, preferably human resource management, business or related topics. Daily or online experience is a plus.

Bachelor?s degree is required. J.D. or legal coursework is preferred.

Demonstrated ability to edit and write news stories quickly and professionally under tight deadlines.

Firm grasp of English grammar, punctuation and Associated Press style.

Knowledge of HR-, business- and government-related issues.

Good verbal skills and ability to deal effectively and work productively with internal staff, government officials, attorneys, businesspeople, SHRM members and leaders and others.

Good computer skills, especially in Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer.
