DIRECTOR & MANAGING TRIAL ATTY

The CNA Insurance staff counsel office in Tampa, FL has an immediate opening for a Managing Trial Attorney. This position requires a lawyer with at least 7 years experience as a litigation attorney in the areas of general negligence, workers compensation, auto, and preferably in the defense of professional malpractice claims. The individual in this position will manage 3 litigators and support staff (2 paralegals and 2 legal secretaries). The position will require strong communication and relationship-building skills with claim customers within CNA and the AVP for Staff Counsel. The ideal candidate must have insurance defense experience. Individual will lead and direct a litigation area, have ongoing cases, and relationship management accountability for litigation and other litigation related work.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Leads and directs the work activities and has full management responsibility for the performance and development of subordinate staff in accordance with strategic direction.
2. Provides counsel, guidance, research and factual findings on complex legal questions and issues to claims and other management.
3. Oversees preparation of position papers on various legal issues through interpretation of legal regulations and contractual and other documents.
4. Resolves highly complex legal cases directing disposition through trial or settlement.
5. Assigns cases to staff or panel attorneys; directs litigation process for area case load, monitors work with outside counsel and coordinates with others as necessary.
6. Acts as attorney of record on all files within the office.
7. Actively participates in trial activities.
8. Stays up to date on legal trends and developments as well as insurance industry issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. Significant trial experience and senior level knowledge of the theories and principles of litigation management within an insurance organization.
2. Seasoned management skills with the ability to coach, mentor and develop subordinate staff.
3. Independent judgment and ability to effectively manage internal and external business relationships.
4. Superior verbal and written communication skills.
5. Exceptional negotiation and analytical skills with the ability to develop and implement tactical strategies in line with business goals and objectives.
6. Ability to effectively manage and resolve ambiguous and complex issues and situations.
7. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
8. Oversee and insure data recorded on litigation software regarding legal files is assiduously maintained.
9. Oversee and insure all communication between staff counsel office and claim customers is timely, thorough, and accurate.

Education & Experience Required:
1. A minimum of seven years of experience as a litigation attorney in the areas of general negligence, auto, and knowledge of defense of professional malpractice claims. Experience in insurance defense required.
2. A minimum of three years of experience managing other attorneys.
3. A member of the Florida Bar.
