P&C Paralegal I

Position Description:

LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY:
1. Paralegal certification from a state or American Bar Association approved school preferably in conjunction with an Associate?s Degree. A person meeting state requirements for Paralegal status or a J.D. degree from a local law school will also satisfy this requirement.

2. Proficiency in PC systems/automation/applications.

3. Efficient and effective workflow management and organization skills.

4. Ability to draft basic pleadings and perform basic legal research using legal databases.

5. Good communications skills as demonstrated by proficiency in word processing and ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing with Claims adjusters and insured clients.

6. Must understand basic court procedures including court motions calendars.

7. Ability to accurately summarize discovery responses including medical records.

8. Understand and adhere to applicable ethical rules of legal profession and any state laws or rules pertaining to paralegals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Act as part of a litigation team with the Attorney and Legal Secretary.

2. Under the direct supervision of an attorney,
a. Assume responsibility for document management, including record retrieval and summary

b. Draft or summarize discovery responses

c. Drafts motions, pleadings, and other litigation-related documents.

d. Coordinates discovery with expert witnesses and clients by gathering documents or other requested items.

e. Perform any delegated task normally performed by a lawyer that is not otherwise prohibited by statute, court rule, administrative rule or regulations, controlling authority, or the applicable state?s professional rules.

3. Take Continuing Legal Education (CLE - 6 hours) per year or as per state requirement.

4. Understands the duty of a paralegal to maintain client confidentiality.

5. Shall work well under pressure; meet multiple and competing deadlines; and demonstrate an ability to work in a respectful manner that encourages teamwork despite disagreements.
