Analytical Scientist

 

Pliant Corporation in Newport News, Virginia is looking for a new member to its Corporate Lab team.  The lab is responsible for analytical and physical testing of thin blown and cast film.  The lab supports production quality and development of new products for the entire corporation in a fast-paced environment with ever changing priorities.

 

Job DescriptionPerform, interpret and report analytical and physical results Design methods for both analytical and physical testing Advise technical details about testing and processing Consult new equipment purchases Providing occasional weekend production coverage

 

Education

Chemistry BS, Materials Science BS or equivalent experience considered

 

Experience

Minimum 3 years experience in analytical investigations performing and interpreting:

?  Analytical testing and interpreting: FTIR, DSC, GC, TGA

?  Polymer film microscopy studies (Cross sections, layer ratio, etc)

?  Physical testing (Tensile, Surface, Optical, Heat Sealing, etc.)

?  Express results through written reports

 

Personal Characteristics

Any candidate for this position must have the ability to bring additional skills and abilities to the Corporate Lab team.  The individual will not only be required to learn procedures and methods of the Corporate Lab, but will also be expected to be an active contributor willing to teach the current staff from their experiences.  This position also requires the candidate to have excellent project leadership skills.

 

Skills and CompetenciesKnowledge of base materials and additives used in thin film production Ability to discuss intelligently details of thin film polymer mechanics, analytical testing methods, results and theory to customers and suppliers Ability to apply analytical concepts to solve analytical problems Works independently and with a team Excellent written and verbal communication skills Computer literate including Microsoft Office applications
