Caster Operator
Job Description
Primary Purpose
Performs a variety of duties associated with operating the caster and the rolling mill. Uses judgment to determine when maintenance work must be presented to maintain quality parameters. Coordinates mill and caster shutdowns to achieve maximum efficiency. Maintains personal safety and the safety of those around him at all times by following all safety rules and SOP's.
Essential Functions
1. Complies with all safety policies. Wears required personal protective equipment and reports unsafe acts or conditions, holds safety as a core value at work & off the job and supports Zero and Beyond".
2. Keeps the work areas clean and orderly at all times.
3. Drives the caster as required and uses judgment regarding when to shut the caster down for a belt / block change
4. Monitors the condition of the belts and blocks, determines proper graphite ratio for blocks, makes adjustments to maintain acceptable quality standards
5. Assists with casts changes as required.
6. Sets up the mill for production, entering proper roll speeds, diameters etc... changes rolls as required to meet quality standards.
7. Performs a variety a functions such as changing rolls, setting up guides, clearing cobbles, and recording appropriate data daily.
8. Monitors the quality of the rod as it is produced by taking actual rod measurements and by communicating with the auditor, takes corrective action when necessary to bring the process back under control
9. Works and coordinates in an environment to meet organizational goals/objectives.
10. Maintains parameters & procedures per SOP.
11.Assists other employee's as needed to complete tasks in efficient, timely and safe manner.
12. Troubleshoots all unusual conditions and problems to maintain established SOP parameters. Performs basic mechanical repairs
13. Completes all required forms and documentation.
14. Communicates clearly, willingly and openly with other employee's and supervisors.
15. Exhibits computer proficiency in order to access basic information (SOP's, JSA's, Work orders, etc...)
16. Performs other duties as directed by supervision
Minimum Requirements
* Must be able to drive a forklift and receive certification.
* Must be capable of operating, or learning to operate various mobile, stationary, or process equipment.
* Ability to monitor and make necessary adjustments to several processes simultaneously.
* Must be a self-starter and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision.
* Strong mechanical aptitude to work with tools & perform operator maintenance on production machinery.
* Ability to communicate verbally & in writing to comprehend and apply safety rules and procedures and utilize machine operating manuals/instructions.
* Basic computer literacy to input, access and extract information from automated systems.
* Physical dexterity, endurance to high ambient temperatures near open flame and molten metal.
* Must be able to demonstrate regular and reliable attendance, work overtime as business needs dictate and perform other duties as assigned.
* Willingness to work all shifts including off shifts (2nd and 3rd)
Preferred Qualifications
* Prior manufacturing/industrial experience operating heavy industrial equipment a plus.
* Past exposure to metal casting and rolling operations a strong plus.
Criteria/Conditions(specific background and skills)
Work is performed in a manufacturing plant which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles.
* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see.
* Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy to heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the course of the workday.
* Personal protective equipment is required on a regular basis, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety foot wear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and other protective equipment as required.
