Formulation Chemist
Arlon Engineered Coated Products has an immediate opening for a Formulation Chemist in our manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas. This position is responsible for product testing & qualifications, defining product & application needs, and participation in product transition from other existing manufacturing sites. This individual is expected to work independently on various projects as well as with suppliers to resolve raw material issues involving quality & pricing; with customers to address needs & concerns; and internally with manufacturing, marketing & sales, and materials management.
SUMMARY:
Assists in the development of new products and processes to expand or improve product lines. Conducts research, analysis, synthesis and experimentation on substances for such purposes as product and process development and application.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Conducts research to assist in the development of new and improved adhesives, primers and liners. The development process includes identification of raw materials, optimization of formulations, lamination processes and planning, monitoring, and evaluating results of experimental manufacturing trials from initial feasibility studies through scale-up and into standard production.
Determines new product requirements by coordinating with Project Managers and others in the organization. Participates in outside Alpha and Beta Site testing to monitor success of products and to gain additional information on customer requirements and the needs of the marketplace.
Develops specifications, test methods, standard operating procedures, and other controlled documents as required.
Evaluates alternate or replacement raw materials to ensure an ongoing supply of raw materials for all products.
Under general supervision, modifies products Industrial product lines to improve product performance, productivity, and cost.
Works with vendors and equipment manufacturers, and surveys recent literature, to stay current on state-of-the-art materials and processes.
Manages individual projects to conform to budget and time targets. Develops appropriate documentation, transition documents, and reports to comprehensively communicate project status.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
BS in Polymer Science / Chemistry / Chemical Engineering or related field. Some education requirements can be replaced by a minimum of 5 year?s direct experience in the pressure sensitive adhesive or coatings industry. Minimum of 5 years experience with coatings, laminations, structural adhesives, and/or solvents & water-based pressure sensitive adhesives. Hands on skills with lab testing equipment including FTIR, DSC, TLMI, Instron, and Rhelology preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with people at all levels of the organization and with vendors and customers.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Basic mathematics and statistics required.
