Product Development for the Appleton Performance Packaging Division is primarily involved in developing new film structures to meet demanding applications for food, medical and industrial packaging. These films incorporate properties such as hermetic heat sealing, toughness, durability, barrier to gases and liquids, thermoform-ability, and stiffness to meet market requirements dependant on the product contained in the package as well as the machinery utilized to manufacture the packages.



As part of the effort to develop improved barrier materials, Appleton has been awarded government funding for development of barrier constructions that would apply specifically to government ration programs (MRE?s). This position will assist in development of non-foil, high barrier polymeric constructions along with investigation into new technologies for film manufacturing and processing to provide new technological breakthroughs in this area. This position will work with emerging technologies such as nano-composites, plasma treating and coating of films and post-orienting of film structures as well as analytical techniques to measure and compare potential performance enhancements accomplished.



Initial duties of this position

Leading the development efforts on assigned projects, effectively interacting with team members, customers and suppliers, coordinating work with outside contractors, preparing presentations of development work and presenting updates to customers.

Actual responsibilities assigned will vary depending on the skills and qualifications of the person in the job and the evolving needs of the Division?s customers.



Qualifications/Requirements

Background in polymer chemistry with knowledge of polymers used in film manufacturing: understanding of nano-composites and working knowledge of plasma treating/coating of films. Knowledge of analytical techniques used for evaluation of surface properties and chemical interactions.

Prior experiences with film manufacturing and post-orienting along with strong project management skills are desired.

The desired related experience is 5-10 years.




Educational Requirements

Minimum educational requirements include a BS degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or related field of study.

Experience will be considered in place of educational requirements.
