Summary:

 

KaBOOM! is a non-profit social enterprise whose mission is to create great playspaces through the participation and leadership of communities.  The KaBOOM! community-build playspace model has resulted in the creation of more than 1,000 playgrounds, skateparks, playing fields, and ice rinks across North America.  KaBOOM! is undergoing an unprecedented period of growth and transformation as it moves toward fulfilling an ambitious Going to Scale strategy aimed at increasing the public awareness of the importance of play and accelerating the pace and quality of community-led playspace projects through new community-oriented, community-led models.

 

As part of that effort, KaBOOM! has been developing a new Web portal with emphasis on community-supplied content and participation.  We are ready to take that initiative to the next level of development and support, and we have four new positions that will constitute a tightly working KaBOOM! Web portal team.  These positions will work with, and within, the Community and Online Programs department at KaBOOM!  Both individually and collectively, these positions will work closely with all departments throughout KaBOOM! in establishing an organization-wide role of the Web portal in achieving the mission and vision of KaBOOM!.

 

The Online Content Manager is responsible for managing the content of the KaBOOM! Web portal and content management system. KaBOOM! is rich with fantastic, inspiring stories that need to be told. The Online Content Manager will be the head storyteller.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

? Develop and oversee the Web portal editorial calendar;

 

? Ensure that KaBOOM! staff with writing assignments meet appropriate editorial deadlines and edit the writing for style, consistency and tone;

 

? Work with the Online Communities Manager to continuously mine user-created content on the portal to highlight on the Home page and to incorporate into KaBOOM! tools and publications;

 

? Work with other departments throughout KaBOOM! to bring key KaBOOM! knowledge, community partner experience, and best practices onto the portal;

 

? Conduct interviews and write success stories about playground build projects.

 

? Select content from the KaBOOM! Toolkit and write teaser text for placement throughout the portal as links into deeper content; add to and refine the KaBOOM! Toolkit online

 

? Additionally, on a continuing basis,

? Manage ?In the News? content on the portal, including proactively seeking out articles on play, playspaces, and related topics in popular magazines, newspapers, etc.;

? Regularly scan key research journals and databases, as well as playspace industry trade press to keep current on research relevant to play and playspaces, and write articles to post on the portal;

? Maintain the ?Playful Links? to external sources useful for play and playspaces.

 

Essential Functions:

 

The employee must have the ability to maintain acceptable standards of office conduct; the ability to handle stress and get along with others; and the ability to work on a computer. The employee typically sits or moves about to coordinate work.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds. 

 

Occasional travel is required.

 

Qualifications:

 Good interpersonal skills;Demonstrated experience in writing under deadlines at different levels for publication on the Web, ranging from writing short promotional copy, to writing popular press-style articles, to writing moderately technical articles, to synthesizing academic and research literature and expressing the resulting synthesis in plain language;Strong organizational skills and demonstrated experience in managing editorial calendars or similar schedules for online publishing that required coordinating many different authors? contributions under deadline;  Outstanding interpersonal skills and experience in managing projects across departments;Willingness to very quickly become familiar with the playspace industry and learn hands-on about the community build model for creating playspaces;Hands-on experience with HTML or Web graphics or design would be a plus.

 

In addition to the specific requirements, additional qualifications for this position include an ability to work independently with minimum supervision at times, while also being able to work as part of a closely integrated team.  Must have a high level of comfort in working on projects where boundaries and responsibilities can sometimes blur, and see the achievement of organizational results and team goals as superseding strict territorial divisions of responsibility.  An ability to work effectively and calmly under pressure of deadlines is essential.

 

KaBOOM! has a staff of 60 with its main office in Washington, DC and branch offices located in Chicago, Atlanta, and San Mateo, California.  This position is located in the Washington, DC office.  Telecommuting is not a possibility at this time.  The work environment at KaBOOM! is characterized by a fast pace and consistently high job performance from a group of very bright, very talented, and very outgoing people who are dedicated to achieving social good.
