Vice President, Development
The Doheny Eye institute, dedicated to the "restoration, preservation, and improvement of human eyesight is an independent, non-profit organizatio affiliated with the University of Southern California, and has emerged as a world-renowned center for vision research, education, and patient care. We rank among the nation's top ten centers as a recipient of National Eye Institute grants, which funds 80% of all vision research in America.
The Institute's research programs are resulting in new diagnostic and treatment procedures and are respected internationally for the quality of research being conducted.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the development functions of the Doheny Eye Institute including planning, implementation and management of staff operations related to fund raising. Additionally staffs two committees of the Board.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key: Achieve institutional base. Need a major capital campaign to build endowment.
MANAGEMENT
1. Responsible for directing an integrated program for defining, popularizing and securing acceptance of major goals.
2. Develops and recommends operating plans and budgets for all activities organizationally assigned to the department, i.e. Development department (department) to avoid confusion regarding Department of Ophthalmology, etc.
3. Responsible for establishing department goals and objectives which support achievement of institutional goals.
4. Reviews and controls the operations and expenditures of the department in conformance with approved plans and budgets; takes corrective management action as necessary should deviation from plans and budgets be identified.
5. Advises Board members, faculty and other members of the administrative staff on matters related to development.
6. Responsible for the maintenance of computerized data on constituents in order to assist the development and public relations functions, as well as to assist other administrators and faculty, when needed.
7. Remains current on management trends and practices within the development area and promotes implementation of innovations wherever practical.
PLAN: Develop Annual Goals and Milestones
FUND RAISING
1. Responsible for developing a master fund-raising plan which integrates the needs of the Doheny Eye Institute, and recommends strategies for implementation with the Board and Management.
2. Responsible for the fund-raising components of the department, including:
A. Capital campaigns
B. prospect research
C. proposal writing
D. annual giving
E. major gifts
F. support groups
G. direct mail
H. prospect solicitation
I. donor resolicitation
J. donor recognition
K. planned giving
3. Must develop Plan with pipeline of number of proposals to be sufficiently larger than yield rate to ensure that financial goals are met.
4. Seeks input from faculty and administrators in order to prepare Needs Assessment and Case Statement for a capital campaign.
5. Presents the needs of the Doheny Eye Institute for current and capital projects to individuals and organizations.
6. Regularly monitors the fund-raising progress and makes adjustment in the fund-raising plan if required in order to achieve results.
7. Directs the identification and systematic review of major gift prospects and establishes appropriate cultivation and solicitation methods.
8. Identifies directors and other individuals associated with corporate or foundation boards who can become involved in the cultivation and solicitation process; develops appropriate fund-raising strategy to be utilized.
9. Responsible for accurate and timely gift recording and reporting for Board and other administrators.
10. Fits Doheny Strategic Plan and Priorities
11. Advises donors concerning gifts made by will and provides drafts when required.
12. Directs the preparation of proposals and the maintenance of proposal records; prepares periodic reports regarding grants obtained.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS
1. Assists the Chairman of the Development Committee by serving in a staff capacity and handles the following:
A. Develops a fund-raising strategy for attainment of goals.
B. Implement fund-raising goals established by the Committee and the Board of Directors.
C. Monitors the fund-raising progress of the Institute and provides detailed information to the Chairman, members of the Committee and the Board.
D. Prepares detailed reports on fund-raising goals for approval by the Committee and the Board of Directors.
E. Responsible for scheduling meetings, locations, times, preparation of agendas and minutes, and reports and correspondence as required.
2. Assists the Chairman of the Nominations Committee by serving in a staff capacity and handles the following responsibilities:
A. Directs research on Board prospects.
B. Obtains information from directors regarding their knowledge and/or association with prospective Board members.
C. Distributes informational materials regarding the Doheny Eye Institute to prospective directors.
D. Monitors the terms of office for each director and advises Chairman of the Committee of required re-election dates.
E. Directs special visits to the Institute by prospective Board members.
F. Suggests names of Board prospects from network.
G. Responsible for scheduling meetings, locations, times, preparation of agendas and minutes, and reports and correspondence as required.
H. Responsible for seeing that annually-required action is brought to the Committee for recommendation to the Board, including suggested Board officers and resolutions required for the transaction of business.
SUPERVISION:
Directly supervises staff in the department (Director of Development, Director of Planned Giving, Director of Planned Giving Administration and Sr. Development Officer).
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Education
A. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher learning preferred or
B. Comparable experience and CFRE certification.
2. Experience
A. Experience with increasing responsibility in the areas of fund raising, public relations, Board management and supervision.
3. Abilities and Characteristics
A. Demonstrated successful track record in development.
B. Track record of successful progression in development executive-level capacity with proven ability to successfully achieve department goals.
C. Ability to interact with public and represent the Doheny Eye Institute in a positive, professional manner.
D. Strong planning/analytical skills necessary to effectively achieve organizational goals and objectives.
E. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
F. Interpersonal skills necessary to work with a variety of internal and external constituents.
