Area Operations Manager - Store Operations-Memphis, TN
The first Family Dollar store was opened in Charlotte, NC in 1959. It was a relatively small, self-service operation located in a neighborhood convenient to low and middle income consumers. The merchandise assortment featured basic goods for family and home needs, and the no frills, low overhead, cash-and-carry environment provided good value at the lowest price points. As new stores opened in the early years of the Company's existence, it became clear that this merchandising concept filled a niche in the marketplace and held great promise for supporting a chain of much larger size.
General Summary:
Overall strategic, operational and leadership responsibility for 25-35 store market with approximately $25M-$50M in retail sales and $10M + operating budget. Responsible for maximizing return on investment, profit and loss, daily operation, planning and development, and implementation of marketing plans for both short and long term sales growth. Has direct responsibility for managing and controlling company assets as well as managing and developing employees for future growth. Provides guidance and support to Store Manager on staff development, customer service, inventory management and control, merchandising, and overall store operating procedures. Store Managers, Performance Manager, Certified Training Manager and Field Specialists directly report to this position.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for exceeding operating goals as established for assigned area related to sales, profitability, and operating expenses through implementation of established programs and processes.
2. Responsible for staff development using Family Dollar training programs to ensure store-operating standards (Anytime 5, selection for success, loss prevention, inventory management, data integrity, merchandising, workplace safety, etc) are consistently met. Administer functional audits to insure compliance. Ensures that operational processes and procedures are executed according to company and departmental standards and compliance measures.
3. Oversees staff training, development and performance management and counsel through Performance Manager and Certified Training Manager to ensure store operating standards (customer service, loss prevention, inventory management, merchandising, safety, etc) are consistently met.
4. Manages operations budget. Reviews and interprets financial and operational information as appropriate. Coordinates periodic financial and/or operational analyses and prepares financial/business reports for Store Operations on a regular basis.
5. Oversees staffing through the implementation of selection for success staffing programs and personnel development programs through succession planning processes and tools. Directly involved in selection process for Store Manager.
6. Develops and implements short- and long-range goals, objectives, and tactical execution plans according to operations area needs.
7. Provides active, directional leadership of operations staff through development and implementation of programs and operating goals aimed at creating a positive work environment and a team-friendly focus. Motivates and empowers employees to achieve peak productivity and performance through increased autonomy and decision making responsibility as appropriate.
8. Special projects as needed (Store of the future, etc.).
Minimum Requirements:
Education: High School, GED. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience: At least 5 years retail experience with 2 years of multi-store management experience.
