Director, Traffic Safety Policy

Summary

 

Leads traffic safety policy development at all levels (association, international, national, state).  Directs and develops association policies and activities related to all areas of traffic safety.  Identifies and analyzes relevant research to support and advance association?s safety advocacy. Determines the need for and conducts primary research projects and activities related to traffic safety. Provides substantive guidance to public affairs and business line staff on research and policy proposals at the state and national levels for a full range of safety issues. Creates and maintains high-level contacts within a large community of scientific and safety policy experts.  Serves as an internal and external AAA spokesperson for traffic safety.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

This position has functional responsibilities as well as one (1) direct report.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.  Determines appropriate association responses and positions on wide range of traffic safety issues by analyzing data and gauging scientific and political environment.  (15%)

2.  Serves as association spokesperson at high-level internal and external meetings related to traffic safety policy.  (15%)

3.  Develops and provides traffic safety information for Board of Directors, President/CEO, Public Affairs Committee & Subcommittees, and club senior staff.  (10%)

4.  Directs association and clubs in development of association-wide priority issues involving traffic safety.  (15%)

5.  Serves as national media spokesperson on issues related to traffic safety.  (10%)

6.  Serves as primary liaison to AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAAFTS).  (10%)

7.  Directs development, strategy, and budget on various traffic safety initiatives.  (10%)

8.  Collaborates with outside scientists to provide traffic safety materials and tools to support and advance association?s traffic safety advocacy (5%)

9.  Represents AAA on national standing committees that are responsible for developing national and international traffic safety policy.  (5%)

10. Conducts original research to determine association positions and to enhance association?s visibility and legitimacy as a traffic safety leader and advocate.  (5%)

 

Requirements

 

?  Ph.D. in public health, transportation safety, or other relevant scientific field and eight (8) to ten (10) years experience in a relevant field, of which three (3) are in traffic safety science

?  Extensive knowledge of traffic safety science and scientific research skills

?  Excellent oral and written communication skills

?  Ability to bridge the gap between the scientific world and the association/public world

?  Extensive network and good relationships within both transportation and public health communities
