Field Machine Operator

EVANS & DANIELS, INC. is looking for motivated, hard-working people.  Our company has been in business since 1987 and has been steadily growing for the past 6 years.  We are specialists (there are less than a dozen in the US which provide this service) in the rotary equipment field.

What the heck does that mean?  Don't feel bad, 99.9% of folks will not have a clue what we do.  Here's a quick description:

Our MAIN customers are asphalt plants, with lesser work coming from paper, cement, concrete, carbon, coal, and recycling plants.  We TRAVEL to these plants, setup custom built grinding machinery (similar to a lathe) and resurface the metal riding rings on rotary dryers and kilns.  After this process is completed, we align the  components of these dryers so that it runs efficiently.  Visit our website for pictures and more info: www.evansanddaniels.com.

What skills are needed?

MECHANICAL skills or potential is a must.  If you have experience as a machinist, car mechanic, contractor, welder, fabricator, handyman, then you likely will catch on quickly.  Machine setup requires some lifting, bolting together with wrenches, working on 1 to 2 story scaffolding, and OFTEN creative thinking....in other words, machine setup varies immensely and requires troubleshooting through the problems.  Mmachine operation requires complete attention to work, 100% safety conciousnous, and constant checking of work progress.  Good eyesight is a must to check work for straightness.  Alignment work requires basic math skills, ability to read measurements, and again creative thinking.

Where and how long are jobs?

Jobs can be ANYWHERE in the continental US (and rarely Canada).  So, you must TRAVEL EXTENSIVELY!!!!  Only those who have flexible lives, are willing AND Able to travel anywhere, anytime need to apply.

Average grinding jobs are 3 to 5 days with a few trips lasting up to 2 weeks (jobs are combined because of geography).  Occasionally 1 day alignment and follow up trips are also necessary.  Jobs that are more than 100 miles (most) from the Wilkes Barre PA area require staying overnight in motels for the full duration of the work.

Where to?  75% of the work is in PA, NJ, NY, DE, MD and VA.  in other words, mainly we are within 200 miles of home.  However, we have done work in California, Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Etc.  Long distant jobs require flying when it is time prohibitive to drive.

How much work, how often?

There is NEVER any guarantee of how busy we will be, BUT, in our history we can make these general assumptions:

From mid-January through June: LOTS of work, very little time off.

July through October: 2/3 weeks work per month is average.

November through New Years holidays: SLow.... 1/2 weeks per month.

For those with machine/welding/fabrication skills, there is some extra "home-shop" maintenance work that would be on a as needed basis.

So please note that this work is Full time duirng our busy season and simmers down to Full weeks working with some weeks off during  our "calm" season.

What's the catch?

The work is usually outdoors, so that means cold in the winter and hot in the summer.  Tarps are used in light precipitation, heavy rain or snow stops the work until it passes.

Most of this equipment is really a big turning oven, so working next to it can be uncomfortably hot, especially in the summer months.

It's also dirty work.  Grinding metal creates dust that tends to go everywhere and there is a good amount of grease and dirt that is found at any industrial setting.  If you are allergic to getting dirty, please don't apply.

What's the good catch?

All meals, snacks, drinks (excluding alcohol), motel/hotel costs are paid for by the company.  A generous rate is paid for all travel time and company vehicles are provided for jobs.

We are a small (but steadily growing) business that has aspirations to run multiple operations simultaneously in the near future.  This WILL create opportunities for the future for those who aspire to take on growing responsibility and increasing wages.

Because we are small we offer a more "personalized" relationship with each employee. Our values of HONESTY, RELIABILITY, DEPENDABILITY, DEDICATION and HARD WORK are evident to all of our clients and employees, and is what we hope in return.

Realize that many operations would not list the 'less-than-desirable" features of the job as we have here.  We do this in an effort to be honest and up-front with each candidate so that you make an informed and educated decision as to whether this job might be for you.  With that in mind, we ask that only serious applicants apply.
