Materials Engineer - Chicago

My client is a leader in noise control and acoustical materials used in a variety of construction, transportation and consumer products. Their noise reduction materials include sound absorbers, sound barriers and vibration damping materials that are considered the industry standard for many difficult and advanced applications. The business has grown dramatically over the past 10 years, but to maintain their industry lead and double their business in the next 5 years, they have created a new position entitled Materials Engineer. The Materials Engineer will be the technical expert on materials, both those used today and those that can be developed for the future.


The Materials Engineer will focus inside the organization, with both R&D and production, to evaluate the materials and processes used in today’s products. He/she will work closely with them in new product/formulation development and testing, and will also educate and advise the sales department. The Materials Engineer will also focus outside the organization at new materials/processes used around the world which may offer improved performance or lower costs. He/she will keep up to date with the latest technology of potential acoustical materials. This will require attending trade shows, visiting vendors and also meeting with key customers to better understand their technical requirements. The Materials Engineer will strengthen the company’s ability to develop new materials and processes of the future.


The position will be located in Chicago not far from O’Hare in a very attractive office/lab setting. The successful candidate will have a 4-year engineering degree in chemistry, materials, polymers, composites or mechanical with a strong plastics background. You must bring the strong knowledge of materials to the position as this is the skill the company is adding. It would be very helpful if you are familiar with acoustics and noise control, but the company can teach how materials can be processed for acoustical applications if the Materials Engineer understands plastic materials. You must be a self-starter, a good communicator plus be creative and energetic. The compensation will be based on experience but generally in the range of $70,000 – 80,000 plus bonus.
