 Bad news for plastic criminals

A specialist unit of the fraud squad has recovered more than 36,000 stolen credit cards and card details over the past two years, it was announced today.

The Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit (DCPCU) is made up of police officers seconded from the City of London and Metropolitan Police forces. During a two-year pilot scheme it has made 171 fraud-related arrests and saved an estimated ?65m in fraud losses.

The unit is funded by the banking industry and aims to target the organised gangs responsible for the majority of the UK's losses from credit card fraud. A total of ?402m was lost through credit card fraud in 2003.

The Association for Payment Clearing Services (Apacs) announced today that it would continue to fund the unit. Sandra Quinn of Apacs said: "Life for the card fraudster is being made increasingly difficult thanks to this kind of investment, and with all the other things we are doing to clamp down on all types of fraud the good news is that cards are becoming ever more secure."
