City trading realises Musampa

Manchester City concluded a hectic day of transfer activity by finalising a six-month loan deal for Kiki Musampa, Atlético Madrid's left-winger, subject to a medical, and moving significantly closer to finalising the sale of Nicolas Anelka to Fenerbahce.

City also called off their negotiations with Besiktas for the transfer of the Spanish international Juanfran after Ben Thatcher's proposed £750,000 move to Fulham was abandoned.

The loan of Musampa, 27, will make up for the loss of Trevor Sinclair, who will be out for the remainder of the season because of injury.

As the Musampa deal was being concluded, officials from Fenerbahce were revising a financial package to prise Anelka away from City, possibly within the next 24 hours. Despite three weeks of negotiations the Turkish champions did not make an official bid for Anelka until lodging one of about £6.5m yesterday.

Thatcher will resume training at City today despite having passed a medical and agreed personal terms at Craven Cottage. Neither club would specify the reason for the deal's collapse but it is thought they were unable to agree on the terms of payment.

Fulham's goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, meanwhile, has agreed a one-year contract extension, taking him up to summer 2006.

Arsenal may well take on Manchester United next week with a weakened defence after Kolo Touré was charged with violent conduct by the Football Association for allegedly elbowing Newcastle United's Alan Shearer in the back at Highbury on Sunday.

Touré faces a three-game ban if he accepts the charge or is found guilty at a hearing scheduled for tomorrow, and would automatically miss Tuesday's Premiership match at home to United.

The Everton goalkeeper Nigel Martyn has signed a one-year contract extension. The club are now hoping Alan Stubbs, David Weir, Leon Osman and Kevin Kilbane follow suit after being offered new deals.

Nottingham Forest's manager Gary Megson has failed to recruit his former West Brom colleague Frank Burrows as his assistant. Megson had announced plans to appoint Burrows as his No2, but he declined the offer.
