Crocs bite back

Your story (Police warning on Olympic contracts, August 24) reinforces the need for payment of the London living wage (currently £7.05 an hour) to be written in to all contracts. Despite previous commitments, the Olympics procurement policy fails to make this a binding requirement. Only when there is an enforceable guarantee of decent wages will the demand for trafficked labour disappear.

Robert Coulson (Letters, August 24) repeats the frequently made claim that inheritance tax is "double taxation". Tax is charged on the transfer of money, not on money. Five-pound notes never bear the legend: "The tax has been paid on this one." Inheritance tax is no more double taxation than is the income tax that a workman in my employ pays on money received from my taxed income.

So BP has launched a carbon-offsetting website (BP revs up for carbon neutral motoring, August 23) with the slogan "Become a carbon neutral driver!" However, that is not so easy. The three tonnes of CO2 released by the average UK car in a year was trapped in a fossilised state for millions of years - no amount of offsetting can refossilise it.

I know how it feels to be cool at the age of 58. I was at my nephew's wedding in Northern Ireland and the two drop-dead gorgeous bridesmaids looked at me with reverence when they saw my crocs (G2, August 22). Oh, and you can wash them in the dishwasher.
