ING Direct to cut interest rate to 4.5% next month

ING Direct said yesterday that it would cut its interest rate from 4.75% to 4.50% from January 1, blaming "less favourable investment conditions". The Dutch-owned bank has attracted one million savers and £23bn with its hassle-free account since it arrived in Britain in 2003.

The bank has no branches and manages all transactions online, by post or phone. Until now ING paid market-leading rates but the bank has reduced it twice in four months. Stuart Glendinning, of moneysupermarket.com, said: "There are now a host of providers that will be able to claim a better easy-access rate than ING."
