Pension trust payments

Q I have a pension plan through the Pension Trust - l work for a voluntary organisation. I now wish to make additional voluntary contributions, but should l do this into a stakeholder pension or into my existing scheme?

A I would tend to favour a stakeholder pension, unless you are receiving a salary of over ?32,000 a year. Charges on most additional voluntary contribution (AVC) schemes have become much more competitive to compete with stakeholder plans and they often offer a wider range of funds. However two big advantages of stakeholder pensions are that they can be taken at a separate time to your main pension, unlike AVCs, and you can take a proportion of tax-free cash if you so wish. Stakeholders are also more flexible in allowing you to vary contributions.
