Poet recruited in attempt to cut suicide rate

A poet has been recruited in the fight to drive down the suicide rate in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. It is hoped the poet, who will be appointed in the next few weeks, will help young men to talk more about their emotions.

The region has Britain's highest suicide rate and a local arts agency believes a poet may be able to help break down the closed and macho culture of Highland men, which is said to be one of the reasons so many young men take their lives.

Robert Livingston, the director of Hi-Arts, said the poet would be based in Inverness and would be paid £4,000.
