Profitability rises at fastest rate for 10 years

Britain's banks, insurers and stockbrokers enjoyed a bumper end to 2005 and the good times should continue, according to a survey today.

The CBI-PricewaterhouseCoopers financial services survey, covering the past three months, shows the sector enjoyed its fastest increase in profitability since December 1996 on the back of booming sales of products and services. It predicts profits will rise in 2006 though at a slower rate.

The increase in profits in the last quarter saw the industry hire more staff. However, bad debts grew for a third quarter and a further increase is expected in the next three months.
