This woman rates India

Charlotte Raven (G2, July 11) writes that she has never heard a good word about India Knight from a woman. Well, here are several.

I was given the proof of her novel My Life On A Plate several months ago. I regarded it with trepidation because I don't read chick-lit novels and was terrified of having to be nice about something I hated. Raven accuses Knight of writing a novel only about herself rather than about some Bridget-Jones-type everywoman, a person I definitely can't relate to. But then, unlike Raven, I don't read novels to read about myself. As I discovered, the brilliance of My Life On A Plate is its originality rather than its pandering to some now worn-out formula.

My own life is nothing like India's (or her heroines). What I admire about her writing is that she is a great stylist, and underneath the enjoyable froth there is always an undertow of morality and even sadness.
